LOS ANGELES -- Will Tom Hanks crack "The Da Vinci Code"? Director Ron Howard and producer Brian Grazer, the team behind "A Beautiful Mind" and "Dr. Seuss's How the Grinch Stole Christmas," said in Newsweek that they wanted the "Saving Private Ryan" star because of the cerebral nature of Dan Brown's best-selling novel.

"Tom is an exciting actor to watch thinking," Howard told the magazine. "We probably don't need his status from a box-office standpoint, but he gives Langdon instant legitimacy."

Hanks would play Robert Langdon, a Harvard symbologist who is in a life-or-death race with a secret society to uncover the secrets of the Holy Grail hidden in the works of Leonardo Da Vinci.

The actor's representatives said he is in negotiations to play the part.

Hanks previously worked with Howard and Grazer on the movies "Splash" (1984) and "Apollo 13" (1995).

If you want to talk about a classless movie that he was in that as a kid when I saw it just a couple of days ago was Bachelor Party, That movie was so inapropriate and bad worse than the language in ladykillers and it made me think of Tom Hanks not being a role model after that but, that was then and he hasn't done anything bad since then so he is forgiven!

Tom is a big named star. Cohen Brother movies, though general cult classics, generally don't do well in the theaters. Hanks doesn't need big name movies anymore to make a name for himself, he already did that. So he took on a lesser role, probably as a favor to the Cohen Brothers.

My understanding was that he took the role because the Cohen brothers are reportedly really fun and creative to work with. Hanks is at a point in his career where he can take risks like that and do silly jobs just for fun (whether they tank or not) without it hurting him.
