Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events

I took 12 nine-year-olds to see this movie this weekend.  We'd read all the books in class last year, so I thought it would be a fun treat to take them to the movie.  After reading the books, they were a little disappointed.  They shouldn't have tried to cram three books into one movie.

On the other hand, my daughter (19) went along to help with the kidlets, and she LOVED it.  She'd not read any of the books, and thought it was a good movie and that Jim Carrey was quite good in all the parts.

Had I not read the books already, I think I would have enjoyed it more... still, it's a fun, family movie if you need something to see over the holidays... Smiley

I have read several reviews now that basically all say the same thing, if you've read the books you'll be disappointed, but if you haven't you'll love the film.  Which means it's a good film in it's own right, as a separate piece of work, but not necessarily a good translation of the original stories.

I saw it with my sons and my oldest loved it, but was terrified through a lot of it.  We went with my mom and he spent most of the time with wide eyes clinging to her arm.  My littlest was completely bored with it and spent the entire time ignoring the screen and doign things like telling the people seated in front of us that they were in time-out   Roll Eyes  and getting shushed by me.  LOL  SO I'm sure I missed parts of it, but I did enjoy what I saw.

I went to see it with my three friends last Saturday. I loved it, but I have only read a couple of the books.

Is there going to be a sequel? I mean, they only did like 3 of the books...

They left it pretty open ended for a sequel.

We saw it today and I'm not sure if I liked it or tolerated it.  It was a Jim Carey showcase, for sure.  The kids were beautiful and talented.  The story was full of holes, to me.  I guess I need to read the books.

I agree Rupey.  Jim Carey was too over the top as usual.  he needed to tone it down

Meryl Streep is good in any role she takes on.  She is, however, starting to look old.  Embarassed

What kind of car was Mr. Poe's?  I thought it was a Panhard Dyna, but it's not.   Count Olaf's car was a '58 or '59 Ghia-bodied Chrysler Crown Imperial limousine.

Well, yes, I agree.  However, her looking older makes ME feel older since I was a young adult when I saw her career start.

I ain't seen this movie yet, i have been told it is a very good and enjoyable film, even though i'm not a fan of Jim Carrey, the only film i found him good in was the mask

The best Jim Carey film ever (in my opinion) is Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.  I hope the academy finally gives him some recognition with this one...
