I used to have a copy of the old War of the Worlds radio program that Orson Welles did.  It was so awesome!   I remember thinking - before listening to it - how on earth people could believe it was "real".  Throughout the entire thing he kept saying things like "there's no more electrictiy in the area".. so, how did these people think their radio was working?? Smiley

Then, my brother and I sat one afternoon in our living room (I was about 15 or 16, he was about 12) with the lights off and drapes closed (to make it dark) and listened to this.  The first 30 mins or so, you know you're listening to a radio play... but then there comes a point where you get so absorbed in listening that you forget about it being a play.  At that point, it became very easy to understand how those who tuned in late and missed the announcement at the beginning thought it was a real news broadcast.

The years I taught fifth and sixth grade, it was a regular part of my lesson each year on Halloween.  I'd tell them the story of how this radio program wreaked havoc. I'd turn off the lights (I had windows in my classroom, so it wasn't totally dark) and I start the tape recording of the old broadcast.  They were supposed to draw the Martians while they listened, based on the description in the story.  I always got interesting art... but almost always - before it ended - they'd all go dead silent and just sit and stare at the tape player and listen.

I'm sure Mr. Spielberg's will be amazing, just as all of his movies are.  I've heard his CGI aliens are "very scary"... I still like the radio one.. Smiley

Dakota Fanning has been doing the promos this week on the movie.  Too bad she hasn't been the main focus previously,
for she does an amazing job promoting the movie.

yesteach, thanks for the trivia! Funny, but that trivia was also printed in a local newspaper, sort of promotion for the film I guess.

From the trailers I have seen, Dakota Fanning seemed to have done well in this film. I hope she gets an award for her part!

I'll probably watch this next week, when the hype has died a little.  Grin

In the meantime - if you want to hear the old radio broadcast, you can hear the whole thing here: http://www.earthstation1.com/pgs/radio/des-War_of_the_Worlds.ram.html

It's actually pretty cool - takes about an hour to listen to.  The whole thing is like a radio show (some orchestra playing) and the story is done as "break in" news reports.  The reason so many people didn't turn in at the beginning is because there was a more popular show on for the first 30mins of the program - so they changed stations about midway through and missed the disclaimer at the beginning.  It made Welles a star! Smiley

ohh... I've just seen this last night.... my!!!... it's very gripping... definitely ten times much better than the original IMO....  Cool Cool Cool

it's so gripping that I almost held on my seat throughout the movie... made me a bit breathless on what will happen next... though I know the basic plot this remake is very action packed... I can feel the emotion of the people in the film.... a bit feeling of hopelessness...

after seeing it my knees weakened that I had to walk slowly and rest for a while before driving... and this time of the year is the rainy season here... as I was driving home I could see thunder in the clouds... I can't help being reminded of the thunderclouds in the movie.... Grin

anyways... what differs this remake from the original is that this focused on the family... Cruise's family...

This was actually a good movie.  With one exception.  Dakota Fanning (who i normally LOVE) is annoying as hell in this movie. God all she does is scream and whine.  I wanted to slap her myself.

Other than that, good movie Smiley

But neither movie was the same as the book - it's always been changed to fit the time and place... the book is set in Victorian England, if I'm not mistaken...

I plan on seeing it within the next week.

From TV Guide
WORLDS CHAMPION: War of the Worlds, the Tom Cruise actioner about angry aliens who totally could benefit from some Ritalin, topped the weekend box office with $77.6 million, bringing its five-day opening gross to $113.3 million. Still, War couldn't shake the industry's 19 week slump; the top 12 releases were down 25 percent from a year ago, when Spider-Man 2 debuted with a record $118.1 million. Rounding out the weekend's top five: Batman Begins, with $18.7 million, Mr. & Mrs. Smith ($12.7 million), Bewitched ($10.8 million) and Herbie: Fully Loaded ($10.5 million).

We plan to see it thias week.  Dakota may be a brat in this movie, but she played her role as Spielbery wanted her to do!
Remember Drew Barrymore in "E.T."?  He likes to have children in his movies.  Children sell a film!

Great Movie, that is all I have to say.

The visuals were amazing, the acting is some of the best I have seen, and If you guys hadn't known my dad is a big fan of old sci fi stuff so he thought he was going to be disapointed.  Nope, HE LOVED IT.  I liked the homege with morgan freemans begining and last lines from the original movie, and did anyone else notice that the Grand Parents are the stars from the original. There is an Easter Egg for ya!
