War of the Worlds - Spoiler- Discussion

I put this in a separate thread so as not to spoil in the other one... but, was anyone beside me disappointed that the son was alive at the end?

I mean, I know that makes it the "happy ending" and all.. but what are the odds he would have really survived?  I just thought it was a cheesy, "happy ever after" ending that ruined the effect of the movie..

thoughts?

It's ok by me. A thought that was running thru my head was "There are also other families who went thru with this and some of them might not be too successful. They are focusing on [Tom's] family because it has a happy ending." So I'm not really disappointed.

I didn't like the scene where people where mobbing Tom's car, and then when he gets out and pulls out his gun, a guy says "Calm down." Uh, you weren't calm when you were trying to steal the car! Now you tell them to stay calm?  Roll Eyes

I love the robots. I like it that they hid them in the commercials and ads, so when I first saw it, I was really ... like this smiley  Shocked

My daughter's favorite part was the little aliens in the basement playing with the bicycle, looking at the pictures while Dakota watched them - said it reminded her of kids watching each other play.  And then the "mother ship" calling them back and all four of them taking off - like mom was calling them to come in from playing. Smiley

I just kept thinking - I need to get in shape!  I'd never be able to run/walk that far and get away.. I'd just be an alien snack.. Sad

hehehe, I'd be the main course YT!
The special effects were good and I'll give all the
praise to Steven for his continuing creativity.

As I stated before, I'm so disgusted with TC, it cold ahve made the difference with me liking the movie.
Also I was very tired, for we had just put our friends on the plane for home.
As always, when we're together it's run, run, run, to get it all in and then we don't!
To be fair, I'll watch it again and see if I feel differently.

As for it being a classic, the first one was the classic.
This is a remake!

Yes, but in my opinion the classic was the classic for my parents, this will be a classic for my kids.

hmmm... I like the burning train scene.... and the freakiest is the floating dead people at the river scene...

my only comment here is they (Tom and family) are too lucky... first, they are the only ones who were able to swim out of the sunken ferry,  his son spared after all the military area exploded, and the only neighborhood in Boston spared is the mother's place....

Yeah, the mom's place in Boston bothered me too... no "Red goop" everywhere, didn't even look like they'd had any problems.. apparently the aliens either didn't want to visit Boston, or they missed it when they hit all the other cities on the East Coast??

I think if the son had died, and the mom's place had at least LOOKED like it had been attacked, I could have accepted that they managed to escape everything along the way...

Personally, I'd have stayed in that basement the first time I escaped them... grabbed some meals and water off that downed plane and stuck it out.. of course, that would have made for a really short, boring movie... Cheesy.

It did end like they said,
"OK, we have enough footage, let's end this one".

It was filmed in a few months, due to most of it being
done by computer.   This is good, then again, it isn't!

plus... their van is very lucky too to have escaped from the crashed Boeing 747 on top of the houses..... anyways... where have all the airline passengers gone? no dust or lying clothes around or even dead people.... except the destroyed plane.. hehehe....

well.. actually they did showed Boston destroyed... when showed a scene of the destroyed Boston with the Boston sign along the freeway.... its just that they forgot to destroy that small neighborhood of the mother's... Grin

and I kept wondering how that old van was getting such GREAT gas mileage... ??  All that distance in a van that had been in a mechanics shop, and never had to stop for gas?

I like the scene where they were in the van and swerving around cars. If you notice, the camera was continuously rolling, swerving from right to left, left to right, and the actors continue acting in the car. It's very difficult to shoot a scene without cuts; the actors should know their line very well.

I think Spielberg did a great job on that one!  Cool

The aliens in the basement reminded me of the raptors in Jurassic Park.  Shocked

JP, have you ever seen a movie or TV show filmed?
They DO NOT know their lines well at all!
My husband decided we were in the wrong business.
All one has to do after this big break, is show up,
take a good book, then do as you're told.
30 takes sometimes! Shocked

I haven't seen how WotW was filmed, so I cannot say if they really know their lines at all. But what I said was a general statement about actors who do a continuous scene like what I saw with WotW.

And I was trying to appreciate how the film was directed, not how the actors did.

hmmm... I think they used some movie magic for that scene.... it is not a continuous take.... if you'd look into more closely of the scenery outside the van, it is like a video screen like the old movies did.... a cam crane  cannot be attached infront of the van.. or a heli-cam cannot be used because of the speed....

but then again.. I agree it was a great scene... nice concept to make a dragging conversation a bit lively.... Cheesy
