Memoirs of a Geisha

I literally just got home from seeing this and have a few things to say...

(a lot of my comments come from having spent time in Japan and a bit of research into the geisha life-style - so take them with a grain of salt if you're going on just the book, or even if you haven't read it yet!)

The movie stayed pretty true to the book...but missed some parts that I think are crucial to the story and understaing the story line...like the whole "big sister, little sister" relationship shared by a geisha and a maiko...I understood, but many might not

The casting of Ken Watanabe as the Chairman was great - couldn't have casted that one better...they softened up Nobu-san a little too much - character was better in the book...as for the geisha...they should have tried harder to cast Japanese women in those roles...while they were ok - it was VERY hard for me to think of them as geisha...without the facial features and expressions to go with it...Other than "pumpkin", the main geisha were predominantly of Chinese decent and I had trouble seeing them as geisha (too much time during the movie spent comparing them to the geisha that I saw and met)

Overall, not a bad movie - but better to read the book after than before, or you may be disappointed!

From the previews I've seen, I think this will be a movie I'll enjoy!

Actually Pau - there's no kabuki in the movie...the white makeup is traditionally what the geisha wear, including how they do the "spiky" things down the back and nape of the neck...i do have to say that the kimono were altered from the traditional ones they wore...they weren't as straight as they are usually worn (i heard to please the western audiences they tightened the obi - sash - to make them have a little bit of a waist)...but those shoes are for real - I even have my own pair that i drag out when I wear my kimono (altho they're not quite so high!)

Doesn't the original Kimono have 8 or 9 layers of clothing?

it depends on what the kimono is worn for...generally the ones that the geisha wore consisted of...

an underlayer (which you never see), a mid one (in which the collar is replaced daily - red for apprentice or maiko and white for full geisha), and the top layer (the "fancy" one which then has a corresponding obi)...there are a variety of ropes and soforth that are used to keep the layers flat and to fold them over (the kimono are generally long on everyone - one size fits all - and except if you are over 6 feet you will have to fold it)

for more formal occasions such as weddings and the like, there are additional layers.

hope that helps!
