An hour and 45 minutes of boring, interspersed with 15 minutes of provocative and quite intesting.

This movie really *could* have been so much more.  This is one of the films where they take 5 unrelated stories and bounce back and forth between them until they finally all sort of come together at the end.  Now I have seen this work for films before, and a good example is Traffic, which this guy also wrote.  However, Sodorburg directed Traffic and he has a good eye for editing and how to keep the audience engaged.  He understands how to take something that's disjoined and put it together as a cohesive story.  This guy does not.

There were too many sub-plots, and it bounced back and forth between them too quickly. I never developed any kind of attachment to the characters, and for most of the film I had no bloody clue what was going on.  I was so disinterested that when some characters died it felt like "oh well, that sucks for them".

I really believe there was a story in this and that if the guy had dropped a couple of the other sub-plots and simply focused on the parts with Clooney and the parts with Damon, fleshed those out more, and brought those together at the end, he'd have had a good and interesting film with a ton of buzz.

I couldn't agree more Rhune... I saw it today.
I really wanted to like the movie, I really did. But it was just so complicated and badly explained. Too bad, because as you wrote, the story had potential + some really good actors (not only Clooney and Damon, but also Jeffrey Wright and Chris Cooper... I love those guys).
Go see Brokeback Mountain instead hehe Wink

Yes, it had some great actors in it.  I also thought Alexander Siddiq (the guy from Star Trek) as the prince was well casted.  His character was the most interesting in the whole film, to me.  I hope he starts to see more roles as a result of it.

I didn't know that actor, but I agree, he was good. And I also thought his character was the most interesting... Too bad I didn't understand half the story haha, I'm sure he would've been even more interesting !

What do you think about George Clooney's win in the best supporting actor category at the Globes for this role ?

I think they didn't see the film, lol!

He acted it well, but the role had hardly any lines, he kinda sulked quietly through most of it and just came across as a depressed individual.  I realize he put on weight for the role and that's always lauded when MEN do it for a role in hollywood.  When female actors put on a lot of weight for a role, generally you find criticism in the tabloids and accusations that they let themselves go.  The exception for that would be Charlize Theron for Monster, but the studio also made a big deal about her weight gain for the role prior to it's release hyping up what she did to bring realism to the role.
