Genre: Japanese (English subtitles) horror/thriller

Plot: A "not so near future" Japan has faced a culture where the youth no longer honors and respects the elders. As a result, a law was passed called the "Battle Royale Act" where teens (40-50) are unknowingly taken on a school field trip and drugged. They awaken on a military base on a deserted island to find collars around their neck. They are instructed about the B.R. act in which they given a back pack with food, water, compass, map, and a weapon. The are given 3 days to survive as they have been instructed that they must hunt and kill each other. If after 3 days, there is more than one survivor, everyone dies.... Every 6 hours, they are told on a PA how many teens have died and where the hot zones. If they are caught in a hot zone at that certain time, the collar will kill the teen. If they choose not to fight, the collar will kill them.......

All I can say is.... wow!!! This movie is awesome... Its not really scary but rather gory... In terms of the gore factor, movies like Gladiator, Patriot, Kingdom of Heaven, and Braveheart are much worse..... The movie is reminiscent to such themes as

1) Saw (What would YOU do to survive... Do you really want to live?)

2) Brave New World, 1984 (Whacked Government Policy and the potential thereof)

3) Lord of the Flies.... (that's a gimme)

This movie is hard to come by.... I was fortunate to score a copy.. You can find it online at Amazon.com, Ebay.com, etc...

This movie would never fly if released in America... Teens killing teens bottom line.... As mentioned, not really horror and there is more gore on CSI...

I give it a 9 out of 10... This movie is awesome!!!

Thank you shamon! I have heard of this movie a few years ago. I saw a trailer about it in a Japanese cable channel and it was very scary. (I think what made it gory for me is the blood on their beige-colored uniforms. It just looks horrible!) But since it was Japanese, I didn't know the title. Now I know what I'm looking for.

I have had my copy of this one for a few years...and having taught over there made it even scarier!!! (I was over there during the whole butterfly knife episodes)

Well I've finally watched this movie. This is now one of my favorite horror movies. The premise is really scary. There's a lot of gore too (I'm not much a fan of them). A great movie! Cool

Well you guys should read the book. I got more kick out of the book coz the book gives the characters a lot more depth (well it's 500-600 pages thick I think).

I give 7.4/10 for the movie. Docked off 0.1 because it's just too short!

It's not banned! I found it in National Bookstore's (the widest bookstore chain in the country) online catalogue. Now I just have to find a branch where I can buy it. Or maybe I can ask them to deliver a copy to a nearby branch.

I found out there's a Battle Royale II, but the reviews aren't that impressive.
