Apparently New Line has decided to go with someone else to direct these films because of a lawsuit between them and Peter Jackson's company over accounting discrepancies. They seemingly attempted to strong-arm Jackson into directing it by saying this is how they would settle the lawsuit, but he refused, so they cut off talks and are looking for another director.
