I LOVE these books, and can not wait to see the movie tomorrow... (would have gone today but had to work).  If you've got kids and haven't read these books (or if you're like me and just a kid at heart) you are missing a treat.  The artwork is absolutely beautiful!  I hope the movie does it justice!!

I would advise if you have small children who are easily upset, read the books before you see the movie.  There are instances where the kids are attacked by the goblins and other creatures - I think young kids might be less "scared" if they know that in the end everyone is safe and sound.  They're a fast read (there are five of them, and the attacking starts in the second book).  My friend has borrowed mine to read to her five year old before going, and they have read one each night when they get home...

. . .  have a 13-year-old who read the books but wasn't too keen on seeing the moving. He read the books about 2  years ago. Granted, he read them only after he ran out of Series of Unfortunate Events books to read.

and I STILL can't get him to read the Lord of the Rings trilogy (though he gobbled up Harry Potter)

Anyway, report back on the flick. I loved the trailers, even though I never read the books.

It was a cute movie.. I don't know that I'd take kids under 7 or 8 to see it, it does get a bit intense when the Goblins and Mulgarath start to attack.  My biggest complaint, of course, is that it's no where near as good as the books!  My dd (who doesn't read) said she thought it was a cute movie, nothing she'd recommend to to a friend (she's 23), but good for older kids and teens.

Your son would probably enjoy it.. but, I'm guessing, if he really liked the books, he'd be disappointed so much was left out.

I took my 9 year old to the movie for his birthday.  He did get scared during the tunnels scene, and turned to me and said, "I changed my mind, let's leave and we can watch it on DVD later!" So, I put my arm around him and said in a lighthearted voice, "If they die, the movie would end right now, you don't think that's really how the movie is gonna end, do you?"  He laughed and said no, and we kept watching.  He did really enjoy the ending, which for someone who hasn't read the books, was quite satisfying.
