New British Reality Show Causes Controversy
Sun, Jul 14, 2002 11:28 AM PDT

LOS ANGELES (Zap2it.com) - Having problems finding the perfect mate? How would you like it if the choice was taken out of your hands and given to your kids?

That's what a new British TV series is proposing, which is causing controversy before the show has even hit the air.

The ITV1 daytime reality dating show, which is still in the pilot stages, plans to make children pick a suitable partner for their single mothers from a choice of three single, windowed or divorced men.

Critics are claiming that the series would exploit children.

"Children's emotions are not for entertainment and I think this program is straight exploitation," says Parliament member Debra Shipley, who is part of the Labor party. "It is wholly inappropriate that their hopes, ideas, dreams even, should be manipulated for public viewing."

Dr Adrian Rogers of the pressure-group Family Focus also agreed that the show is an unpleasant example of exploitative television.

The series, hosted by Lorraine Kelly, would give the couples selected on the show an all-expenses-paid date, with the mothers returning to explain how it went.

A spokesman for Calton, the company that produces the show, says the series would be "fun and upbeat."
