ABC Family Goes Backstage with 'The Bachelor'
Mon, Jul 29, 2002 05:50 PM PDT

LOS ANGELES (Zap2it.com) - "The Bachelor II" may make people forget about Alex and Amanda (assuming they haven't already).

For those seeking more dirt on how "The Bachelor's" couple got together, however, ABC is opening up the unseen-footage vaults for a weeklong behind-the-scenes look at the show on its cable sibling, ABC Family.

"The Bachelor: Special Edition," which will air at 9 p.m. ET each night from Aug. 11 to 16, will answer "the questions we've all been so anxious to ask," says Angela Shapiro, president of ABC Family. The Bachelor himself, Alex Michel, will serve as host for the six episodes.

"The Bachelor" was one of ABC's few successes last season, becoming a word-of-mouth hit over its six-week run in the spring. More than 18 million people watched the finale, in which Michel proposed, but only to continue dating, Kansas native Amanda Marsh.

(The two say they're still together, although Marsh is doing a radio show in Kansas City, Mo., and Michel is living in California.)

ABC was so happy with the show it ordered three more installments for this season, including "The Bachelorette," in which "Bachelor" runner-up Trista Rehn will choose That Special Guy from 25 suitors.

The show's success also explains the ABC Family follow-up. Shapiro says "Special Edition" will offer an "enhanced viewing experience and a unique way to repurpose the resources of the company." Because while love may conquer all, TV is still a business.

The Bachelor" is single once again. AMANDA MARSH, who was picked by ALEX MICHEL on the ABC reality show, tells TV Guide that the relationship is at an end. "I'm sure that the ring is going back, " she says. Michel had asked Marsh to relocate to Los Angeles to pursue the romance. However, the prospective bride says she did not think she was a priority in his life. It was only April when Marsh was chosen by Michel from a field of 25 hopeful women to possibly become Mrs. "Bachelor."
