CBS Plans a Reality 'Hillbillies'
Wed, Aug 28, 2002 01:37 PM PDT

LOS ANGELES (Zap2it.com) - They're comin' back now, hear?

CBS is resurrecting "The Beverly Hillbillies" in a new reality format, and will soon begin the search for a real-life "rural family" to take up residence for one year in a posh mansion with all the attendant luxuries. The show will focus on how the new clan adjusts to their new life in Beverly Hills.

Forty years ago, CBS has a huge hit with the original series, which ranked as the No. 1 program on television for its first two seasons, drawing as many as 60 million viewers each week. Audiences laughed at the misadventures of the ignorant Clampett family for nine years, even though the show was much despised by television critics.

Now that reality television has scored big ratings by taking viewers into the homes of Ozzy Osbourne and Anna Nicole Smith, the timing seemed right for CBS to revisit the concept of a down-home family adjusting to a life of luxury.

The network realizes that the show will be walking a fine line between "laughing with" and "laughing at" the new family. "It's a great fish out of water story," Chris Ender, SVP of Communications tells Zap2it. "It's not designed to mock a rural family in any way. It's going to be fun, it's hopefully going to be light and taken in the spirit in which it's intended."

CBS' in-house reality unit will produce the show, tentatively titled "Real Beverly Hillbillies." The top priority is the search for the right family, which will be conducted in rural areas of the country.

"We want to find a family that's different from what most television viewers know but still very relatable," says Enders. Obviously, a family that loves each other a lot.""
