Pepsi May Back Space Reality Series
Sun, Sep 29, 2002 01:02 PM PDT

LOS ANGELES (Zap2it.com) - Coca-Cola was ubiquitous on "American Idol" this summer. Now, rival Pepsi is reportedly looking to back its own TV contest -- to send someone into space

The soft drink maker is floating a proposal for a TV series in which people would compete to win a seat on a Russian space mission, according to the New York Post. The winner would rocket to the International Space Station.

The idea is not a new one -- NBC and "Survivor" producer Mark Burnett were planning a series called "Destination Mir" two years ago that would send a civilian to the Russian space station. The series fell apart when Mir did.

Pepsi would put up to $35 million into producing and promoting the series, with a large chunk of that going to the Russian space agency to reserve the winner's spot on a Soyuz shuttle. The series would likely show contestants going through the training required of cosmonauts, with the best competitor heading into space.

Russia has allowed two wealthy businessmen, Dennis Tito and Mark Shuttleworth, to go on Soyuz missions after each ponied up $20 million for the privilege. *N Sync's Lance Bass has also tried to join a mission, but he was recently denied after sponsors failed to come up with the requisite amount of money.

A Pepsi spokesperson declined comment to the Post.
