'Bachelor' Creator Brings 'Will' to ABC
Fri, Oct 25, 2002 01:02 PM PDT

LOS ANGELES (Zap2it.com) - Where there's a will, there's often a family squabble. And soon, there will also be cameras to capture it for a reality series.

ABC has ordered a new unscripted show called "The Will" from producer Mike Fleiss, the man behind the network's hit "The Bachelor." On the new show, a wealthy (still living) benefactor will offer up his or her estate to family members. But instead of tedious probate-court hearings, the potential heirs will compete for the goods and have the chance to vote others out, a la "Survivor."

"This should give viewers a unique look at a real American family," Fleiss says. "The vote-outs between relatives should be intense."

Details of the game will be tailored to suit the family chosen for the game, and the benefactor will have some input in designing the challenges for his or her family. They could include competitions for incremental rewards from the benefactor's estate as well as chances for would-be heirs to prove their worthiness.

Applications for "The Will" are currently being taken at thewilltv.com. Would-be benefactors can nominate themselves or be nominated by a family member. The application form asks for the usual "describe yourself" information, plus the estimated value of the benefactor's estate and how many times the benefactor has been married.

"The Will" is the first product of a development deal Fleiss recently signed with ABC in the wake of "The Bachelor's" success. The dating show was a bright spot in ABC's pratfall of a 2001-02 season, and the second installment has attracted more young adults -- the viewers advertisers love -- than time-slot incumbent "The West Wing."

"When we put Mike up to bat, he always hits us a home run," says Andrea Wong, who oversees alternative series and specials for ABC. "We expect 'The Will' to continue his tradition of giving us appointment, 'water-cooler' television."

Hmm ... I'm not so sure about this one ... sounds kind of tacky ... but I don't think it could possibly be as bad as the Anna Nicole show, so ... I'll probably give it a shot ... lol
