Meet the Cast of 'I'm a Celebrity -- Get Me Out of Here'
Tue, Jan 14, 2003 04:38 PM PDT

LOS ANGELES (Zap2it.com) - Once ABC found out it could proceed with its celebreality show "I'm a Celebrity -- Get Me Out of Here," it wasted little time in introducing the players and host.

On Monday (Jan. 13), a federal judge in New York dismissed a lawsuit against ABC by CBS, which alleged that "Get Me Out" was a copy of "Survivor." The judge's ruling cleared the way for ABC to schedule the series.

If anything, the name recognition among the players of "Get Me Out" is lower than that of the folks on another unscripted ABC series, "Celebrity Mole Hawaii." Where the latter show has such easily recognizable -- if no longer A-list -- stars as Stephen Baldwin, Kathy Griffin and Corbin Bernsen, the biggest name on "Get Me Out" is probably former Olympic champion/infomercial pitchman Bruce Jenner.

The other contestants are model/actor Tyson Beckford ("Biker Boyz" ); former "Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous" host Robin Leach; E! host and red-carpet interviewer Melissa Rivers; one-time MTV VJ "Downtown" Julie Brown; Howard Stern sidekick "Stuttering" John Melendez; and Alana Stewart, the former wife of Rod Stewart and George Hamilton.

An eighth player will be named later. Comic John Lehr ("Jesse") will be the host.

Like the British show on which it's based, "Get Me Out" will strand the players in a remote part of Australia and watch them try to get by without assistants, cell phones or indoor plumbing. The series will air over 15 consecutive nights in February (a start date hasn't been decided yet).

Viewers will have a say in how the game progresses, as they did in the U.K. version. During the first week of the show, phone and Internet votes will determine which player has to complete a task to earn more food for the group. Then, in the second week of the show, viewers will vote on which person gets sent home. The last celeb standing will win money for a charity of his or her choosing.

Alonso, J. Lo's Ex Join 'I'm a Celebrity'
Wed, Feb 5, 2003 04:16 PM PDT

LOS ANGELES (Zap2it.com) - Why have eight kind-of-famous people on a goofy reality show when you can have 10?

ABC is subscribing to the logic of that rhetorical question by expanding the number of people on "I'm a Celebrity -- Get Me Out of Here!" Cris Judd, best known as the ex-husband of Jennifer Lopez, and actress Maria Conchita Alonso ("Kingpin," "The Running Man" ) are the latest additions to the cast.

They join E! red-carpet host Melissa Rivers, "Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous" guy Robin Leach, Olympic decathlete Bruce Jenner, actress/Rod Stewart's ex Alana Stewart, former MTV VJ "Downtown" Julie Brown, model/actor Tyson Beckford and Howard Stern sidekick "Stuttering" John Melendez on the show. The 10th participant will be named later.

"We've got such a fantastic group of personalities who've decided to join the adventure, we've decided to mix it up even more and add two new celebrities," says executive producer John Saade.

The show, which premieres Wednesday, Feb. 19 and runs for 15 consecutive nights, will strand the players in an Australian jungle and have them perform various tasks that can lead to rewards for the group. Viewers will have a say in who does what task and eventually vote them off of the show.

Why "I'm a Celebrity - Get Me Out of Here!" is doomed to failure
Fans of Reality TV

This show is beginning this week on ABC. ABC is doing several things wrong with "I'm a Celebrity," and dooming it to failure before it even gets off the ground. We really shouldn't even be doing it the favor of providing coverage, but if we didn't cover bad shows, then Star Dates would have been long forgotten.

1. No-name celebrities.

ABC should have realized that you can get away with a small amount of C-list celebrity action when you've got a proven format like The Mole. And even then, you're risking tarnishing the entire franchise by including names no one's heard of. Luckily, at least half the names were recognizable for Celebrity Mole. Not so with this Survivor knock-off. Tyson Beckford? Alana Stewart? Maria Conchita Alonso? Never heard of 'em. Bruce Jenner? Wasn't he on a box of Wheaties or something? How about Nikki Ziering? She at least was on my favorite daytime show, The Price is Right, but I probably couldn't pick her out of a lineup unless she was wearing a swimsuit. If you're going to include the word "Celebrity" in your title, you'd better make sure people recognize the names.

2. Consecutive airdates.

With a weekly show, we can compare it to what's on the other channels, and decide if it's worth a shot. With this extremely odd airing format, ABC is forcing us to make 7 similar choices each week. I guarantee that it won't win at least half of those comparisons. And even at that, no one will want to invest their time in a show they know in advance they'll miss more than half the time. It's a gimmick for February Sweeps, and a poorly-thought-out one at that.

3. Variable start times.

Looking at the scheduled airtimes, I got a headache. This show is not only on every single night, but at a different time each night, virtually guaranteeing that I'll miss every single episode. Even if I wanted to see it, chances are good I'd completely miss it by tuning in too early or late.

4. Too similar to Survivor.

You know you're show's a copycat when there's a long, drawn-out lawsuit involved. ABC got the green light, but maybe should have reconsidered the whole idea as soon as they were served with the subpoena. Airing it now only tells me that they're doing it out of spite. "We won the lawsuit, so we're airing our extremely stupid show just to teach you a lesson, neener neener."

5. ABC is grasping at 'reality' straws.

We all know why reality rules. It's cheap to produce, it's unscripted, it gives us a taste of what we'd be like on TV. It's like crack to the networks. ABC developed their addiction from The Bachelor series, and really went overboard in the last 2 months. I picture an ABC exec on a streetcorner, asking everyone who pulls up if they have a new reality show idea. "Come on, man, I just need a concept!"

So, there you have it. Five reasons why "I'm a Celebrity" is doomed to failure, and in fact should never have seen the light of day. As it stands, it certainly won't see the light of my TV tube, and that's just fine with me. I'll tune back in to ABC when they make a real Mole 3, and pay Anderson Cooper whatever he asks for to come back as the host.

The only ones I know are Robin Leach, champagne dreams, Alana Steward, Rod Stewart's wife, Melissa Rivers - Joan Rivers daughter and Bruce Jenner, USA Gold Olympic winner.

Uh....we shall see what we shall see in the jungles of Australia.  Let the games begin.

Roll EyesOk, the games Huh have begun or is it began Huh whatever they call whatever it is they are doing besides crying and cursing each other, threats and the like!  What our opinion is of this show, and again, it is if you want to even call it a show is  Lips Sealed, if this is all the network has to offer us then they have been  Undecided, and  Cry  Ok, so we did watch it and now we're  Embarassed to admit it!  But hey, it has been a cold cloudy, rainy winter! Angry  Off to the beach with us! Grin...and soon we hope Tongue
