Reality Explosion Forces Emmys To Revamp Fri, Feb 21, 2003 03:23 PM PDT LOS ANGELES (Zap2it.com) - For the week of Feb.10 to 16, six of the programs in the Nielsen Top 20 were reality shows (a number that doesn't include nonscripted fare like "60 Minutes" or "The Married With Children Reunion Special" ). As the landscape of television changes, the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences has adjusted the Emmys to match, adding new reality and nonfiction based categories to their annual awards. Industry trades report that the Academy is adding two more categories to better recognize specific creative achievements in nonfiction productions. Emmys will now be given for outstanding nonfiction writing and outstanding nonfiction direction. Under the old rules, writers and directors were honored only as part of the ensemble production team if their program won an overall award. This marks the second augmentation of the Academy's reality prizes in two years. Additionally, the Academy attempted to clarify their nonfiction categories by renaming them. The new program prizes will be "area awards," meaning that they are voted on by peer group panels, rather than by the Academy membership as a whole. Nonfiction programs will now be eligible in one of four categories. The nonfiction series (traditional) category will be set aside for nature, history, entertainment and other documentary-style programming in the traditional mode that air as part of a regular series (like "E! True Hollywood Story" features). One-time documentaries and features would be up for awards in nonfiction special (traditional). Reality shows would mostly fit into one of two categories. Nonfiction program (alternative/unscripted) will be open to shows observational shows with obviously staged elements like "The Real World" or "The Osbournes." Reality shows with prizes attached, like "Joe Millionaire" or "American Idol" will compete for outstanding reality/competition programming.
