I love this show, btw Bang the Gong, Iron Chef vs. Iron Chef Is On Mon, Mar 3, 2003 04:12 PM PDT LOS ANGELES (Zap2it.com) - Ever sat with friends debating who was the best Iron Chef Japanese -- the original, Rokusaburo Michiba, or the new kid on the chopping block, Masaharu Morimoto? Ever pondered who would make the best squid-based dishes, Iron Chef Chinese Chen Kenichi or Iron Chef French Hiroyuki Sakai? While the world may never know the answer to that first question, the second may be determined in the first ever "King of Iron Chefs" tournament, airing on The Food Network from April 5 to May 3. Over five consecutive Saturday nights, Iron Chef Japanese Masaharu Morimoto, Iron Chef French Hiroyuki Sakai, Iron Chef Chinese Chen Kenichi and Iron Chef Italian Masahiko Kobe will go head-to-head to determine the champion of champions. The first episode will pit Chen Kenichi (son of the dean of Szechuan cooking) against Masahiko Kobe. The theme ingredient of the battle will be Tokyo X Pork, which apparently is a special cross-bred black and white pig. The Food Network promises savory dishes including Papardelle Meat Sauce and Szechwan Style Tom Polo. The next week, Hiroyuki Sakai and Masaharu Morimoto will face off in a Battle Bell Pepper, where the resultant dishes will include Steamed Bell Pepper Custard and Bell Pepper Royale with Pike Eel. An added wrinkle for this battle is that the chefs will cook with the staffs of their restaurants looking on. The two part grand finale will take place over two weeks and will feature some sort of lobster as the theme ingredient. Even after one chef has victory in his grasp, the winner will be pitted against French Chef Alain Passard in an ultimate Battle Ron Kon Kai Chicken to assert international mastery. All battles will, of course, be held in kitchen stadium with Chairman Takeshi Kaga looking on. Fukui Kenji will give commentary and Ohta Shinichiro will be on the cooking floor providing sage updates. The first episode of "Iron Chef" aired in Japan in 1993. Since 1999, a dubbed version of the show has appeared on The Food Network courtesy of FujiTV.
