TV keeps it real with slew of new series By Alisha Davis CNN Headline News Thursday, April 17, 2003 Posted: 9:19 AM EDT (1319 GMT) (CNN) -- With the war in Iraq dominating television news, some analysts predicted that reality TV -- as in unscripted shows -- would take a beating. But the genre has survived pretty much unscathed. While shows such as ABC's "Are You Hot? The Search for America's Sexiest People" have received a cool reception, the reality concept remains on fire. Not only are past hits such as CBS' "Survivor" and Fox's "American Idol" continuing to post big numbers, but there are also a slew of new shows on the way. Here's a rundown of some of the most highly anticipated new series: "The Apprentice": Donald Trump teams up with "Survivor" producer Mark Burnett to create a show about the corporate jungle. Twenty wannabe tycoons will compete for a six-figure job assisting Trump, who gets to fire one contestant a week. "Who Wants to Be a Superhero?" Contestants will compete to have their original idea for a superhero made into a comic book or some other project. They also must have a superhuman lack of shame: Semifinalists have to act out their superhero in costume for Stan Lee of Marvel Comics fame. "Mr. Personality": Despite the dubious judgment she's shown in her relationships with men, Monica Lewinsky will help the gals pick a guy as the host of Fox's "Mr. Personality." The series, which kicks off April 21, will feature 20 masked men attempting to woo a woman without revealing their physical charms. "The Simple Life": Hotel heiress Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie will amuse America by trying to adjust to life on a rural farm without breaking a nail in this fish-out-of-water series. "Rock Bottom": An HBO special will feature Jason Mewes, who's played stoner Jay in several Kevin Smith films, as he tries to kick his real-life heroin addiction. MTV, which pioneered the genre with "The Real World," will keep things real with a full slate of new unscripted programming. These include Paula Abdul hosting a cheerleading talent contest, Jessica Simpson and Nick Lachey chronicling their first year of wedded bliss, and Blink-182 making their new album.
