Reality Central Responds to TV's Reality Dearth Mon, Apr 28, 2003 12:50 PM PDT LOS ANGELES (Zap2it.com) - If television viewers have been saying anything for the past couple years, it's that there's just not enough reality TV. Bravely entering the void, Larry Namer, a cable veteran, and Blake Mycoskie, a reality television veteran, are planning a channel devoted entirely to reality programming. Creatively named "Reality Central," the new channel should be ready for a launch next year. The proposed cable network has an extra bonus hook. Not only will its entire line-up be dedicated to unscripted television, but much of the network's seed money will come straight from the coffers of some of reality television's biggest winners. "Survivor: The Outback" winner Tina Wesson and "Amazing Race 2" winners Alexander Boylan and Christopher Luca were among the first people approached by former "Amazing Race 2" contestant Mycoskie when he was raising scratch for the network. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Reality Central has raised $25 million in funds and hopes to have a subscriber base three to five million by its launch early next year. Programming will be a mix of network reality reruns, imported international programs, and near-endless behind-the-scenes shows about the big games and their big stars. "We're a publicist's dream," says Namer, co-founder of the Movietime Channel, which eventually morphed into E! Entertainment Television. "They're fighting for 10 seconds for a new show on 'Entertainment Tonight.' We can say, 'Hey, we'll do a whole preview show.'" Namer says that 26 reality television vets have already signed on to do appearances including Wesson and fellow "Survivor" champs Richard Hatch and Ethan Zohn. "We know people have an unquenchable desire for these shows and to know more about the people on them," Mycoskie optimistically states.
