'Sex' Comes to Shanghai Sat, May 31, 2003 12:32 PM PDT LOS ANGELES (Zap2it.com) - It is doubtful that they will ever do an episode about "funky spunk," but China has launched its own version of the hit HBO comedy "Sex and the City" entitled "Hot Ladies." Based on a hit Taiwanese comic book, the show's 40 episodes follow the romantic lives of four Chinese friends including: Rene Lau (Liu Rouyin), a woman obsessed with getting married; Ru Nan (Zhang Yan), an ambitious career woman; Wan Ling (Chen Hao), a beauty who flits between relationships; and Ha Mei (Xue Jianing), a naive hipster. "The two shows put the women into a similar background, focusing on their experiences and views about love and marriage," series director Zhu Yi tells the Shanghai Daily newspaper. "But I believe the four Chinese ladies in our production are more closely related to the home audience." While "Sex and the City's" New York singles well into their 30s and 40s, "Hot Ladies" gals are all twentysomethings.
