No Love for Reality Contestant

Bet those gals won't feel so bad now about pulling the wool over Rob Campos' eyes.

Campos is the star of NBC's latest reality love match (of sorts) For Love or Money. He's in the midst of being tricked into popping the question to one of 15 randy bachelorettes, who are competing for a $1 million payoff for being on the receiving end of his proposal.

But it seems that Rob's not that innocent after all.

The Joe Millionaire lookalike apparently fibbed on his application and isn't quite the honorable military man he claimed to be. In reality, according to a new report on the Smoking Gun Website, the 33-year-old lawyer was effectively booted from the Marines for getting plastered and feeling up a female Navy officer during his stint at the Newport Naval Station in Rhode Island. He never actually made it to the status of Judge Advocate General, like he initially claimed.

The Website, which has made a habit of exposing reality show contestants, says Campos got in hot water after stumbling into the woman's dorm room and grabbing her breast during JAG training four years ago. He didn't get too far, however, as she kneed him in the groin and ran out of the room. Campos then proceeded to limp to the women's bathroom and throw up all over the place, the report says.

Drunken boob grabber, of course, was not on Campos' official résumé posted on NBC.com. Instead, his network bio says, "Rob joined the U.S. Marine Corps as a Judge Advocate. While serving, he won a prestigious medal for running the tax center." (NBC has since removed the bio from its Website.)

Campos was simply on the path to a JAG career before he got bounced from the training program soon after his self-imposed booty call, according to the Smoking Gun.

Campos was reportedly expelled, punished by the program's administration, sent to a substance abuse treatment program and allowed to leave the Marine Corps 20 months before the end of his service commitment.

The victim of the attack, who spoke to the Smoking Gun on the condition of anonymity, called Campos a "big jerk" and a "meathead" but said she considered him the real victim because his actions destroyed his potential military career.

None of this was mentioned by Campos when he signed up for his tour of duty on NBC.

In a statement Monday, NBC insisted that both the network and the show's producers, Brush Nash Entertainment, did a thorough background check on Campos, now a Texas-based attorney, but didn't uncover his true JAG history until Friday, when tipped off by the Smoking Gun.

"NBC and Nash were not aware of the incident that occurred while Mr. Campos was in the military. The incident is not public record, and thus was not found in the public record searches conducted by the investigator hired by the show. Nor did Mr. Campos inform the producers about the incident. Clearly, this would have been material information during the screening process," the network says.

Campos says in a statement issued through NBC, "I have apologized to NBC and Nash for not informing them about the incident. I had believed that it was a private matter that had been resolved." He also says that, "in connection with the incident, I have acknowledged that I behaved inappropriately."

But, as the Smoking Gun notes, the publicly available version of Campos' service record shows that he did not complete JAG school--a point the producers seemed to have overlooked, that is, if they ever obtained Campos' military transcript.

But if Campos' behavior so far on the show is any indication, it's not likely the network was all that surprised. In the very first episode of For Love or Money, which debuted June 2 with a solid 10.2 million viewers, Campos apparently got drunk and disorderly in the pool with his 15 would-be brides. He eventually apologized on camera to everyone after many of the ladies, including one who he kicked into the pool, complained.

The Campos revelations will not affect the show. NBC says production has already wrapped and "the actions of the participants were carefully monitored." No mention of Campos' military indiscretions will be made, either.

Campos could still get his just desserts. In the show finale of For Love or Money, the winning bachelorette (unbeknownst to her) will have to choose between Campos and the cash.

'For Love or Money' Star Hid JAG Scandal
Mon, Jun 9, 2003 12:52 PM PDT

LOS ANGELES (Zap2it.com) - The women on "For Love or Money" know a secret that the man they're pursuing doesn't. They know that the winner can pocket a million dollars for ditching him. However, the show's central hunk also seems to be holding back, one that he kept from the women and NBC officials alike.

Attorney Rob Campos' official NBC biography and the one on his law firm's web site both reference the "For Love or Money" hunk's experiences in the JAG Corps. Neither bio mentions the drunken incident that got Campos booted from the JAG training program and ultimately led to the end of his military career.

Naturally, the scandal was unearthed by the good folks at TheSmokingGun.com.

A spokesperson for NBC and the show's producer Bruce Nash told TheSmokingGun.com that Campos failed to disclose the problems he caused in mid-June, 1999 while he was training in Newport, Rhode Island. After a night of drinking, Campos allegedly barged into the room of a the-27-year-old fellow trainee, made advances and groped her before she kneed him in the groin and fled the room.

According to interviews conducted by TSG, the female trainee didn't immediately report the incident, but rumors spread and she was finally interviewed by Naval Criminal Investigative Service agents. Campos was immediately removed from the JAG course. The victim in the incident refers to Campos as "that big jerk, that big meathead," but seems to view the implosion of his military career as punishment enough.

Because the military incident was not in the public record, it didn't come up when NBC's investigator did his search.

For his part, Campos, in an interview with TSG, remembers the drinking, but nothing else that may have followed. He still suggests that the woman's story may have been a fabrication, offering, "My buddies said she got angry because I was too drunk to get it up."

In a slightly less sleazy and somewhat more contrite statement to the press, Campos says that he has apologized to NBC and to Nash for casually forgetting to mention this smudge on his record.

"I received two commendations while in the military, as well as an honorable discharge, and did not believe that the incident was relevant to my potential participation in the show," Campos disingenuously says. "In connection with the incident, I have acknowledged that I behaved inappropriately."

NBC has no plans to pull the show, which has already completed shooting. It will, however, be much easier to root for the women to take the money over the boor.
