MTV Can't Film 'Challenge' in R.I. Resort Thu, Jun 12, 2003 03:33 PM PDT LOS ANGELES (Zap2it.com) - The latest edition of MTV's "Real World/Road Rules Challenge" is hitting the road after being denied in a posh New England town. The show had planned to begin filming in Newport, R.I., a resort town that was the Gilded Age summer home of Vanderbilts and Astors, later this month. But a local zoning ordinance has forced Bunim-Murray, the show's producer, to look elsewhere. "Newport is out of the question for this year," Mayor Richard C. Sardella tells the Newport Daily News. "I'm disappointed. I think it's something the city will miss." The show would have likely generated several million dollars for the local economy. The ordinance that threw a wrench into MTV's plans states that no more than five unrelated people can live together in the same house. All 28 cast members were set to stay in an estate known as the Ivy Tower. Attempts to find other housing came up short. Producers had planned to install a pool at Ivy Tower, which could have caused further problems. The estate is in a historic district, and the pool would have required approval of the city's Historic District Commission. MTV has found another location -- details aren't finalized, so the network isn't saying where -- and hopes to begin shooting the "Challenge" on its original start date of Friday, June 27.
