Irish "reality TV" ship sinks
Fri Jun 13, 5:51 PM ET

DUBLIN (Reuters) - An Irish reality television show nearly sank without trace after the ship carrying contestants around the country's treacherous coastline hit the rocks and broke up.

Terrified contestants taking part in state broadcaster RTE's "Cabin Fever" programme were winched to safety by helicopter after the boat they were supposed to stay aboard for eight weeks ran aground near Tory Island, Donegal, in northwest Ireland.

A producer with the company making the programme -- flagged as the Irish television event of the summer -- said all precautions had been taken, the ship thoroughly checked before setting out and the crew trained in sea survival.

"I have no idea how it happened," he told RTE.

He said the incident had not been caught on film as the camera crew had not been on duty.

"(But) we would rather not have one hell of a programme -- we would rather have a safe ship," he said.

Lifeboats rushed to the ship's aid after crew members sent out a distress call on Friday afternoon.

RTE said the vessel, carrying 10 contestants competing for a cash prize, the camera team and ship's crew, had later "completely broken up" and was "unsalvageable".

However, it added the show would go on. A replacement ship was being found in England, and filming of the endurance test contest -- an Irish version of reality TV hit "Big Brother" -- would continue on nearby Tory Island.

Irish Reality Show in Dry Dock After Ship Sinks

2003-06-19 08:26:06 GMT (Reuters)
LONDON (Hollywood Reporter) - Ireland's state broadcaster said Wednesday it is reviewing the future of its proposed international reality format "Cabin Fever" after the ship on which the show was filming sank with the cast and crew on board. And though the cast of 10 shipmates was uninjured, they are understood to have since consulted with lawyers.

RTE's elimination-style reality show was two weeks into a planned broadcast run of eight weeks when the accident occurred Friday.

The shipmates were forced to wade, walk and swim to the shore of a nearby island after the 90-foot, two-masted schooner hit rocks and went down off the northwest coast of Donegal, Ireland. Members of the crew remained with the ship but had to be winched to safety by helicopter.

"The future of the program is being reviewed by RTE in consultation with the show's 10 contestants," reps for the broadcaster said, but they conceded that early plans to relaunch the show using another ship are unlikely. "This was a freak accident. We will review the options and make an announcement when we know what is going to happen."

RTE had hoped to use the domestic success of the show to launch the format internationally. Broadcasters that took the format would have been able to use the specially constructed ship, which was fitted with cameras, lights and broadcasting equipment.

All that now remains of the multimillion-dollar boat, however, is a shattered underwater wreck and floating debris. The accident is the subject of an inquiry by Irish marine investigators.

Future Prospects for 'Cabin Fever' Develop Scurvy
Thu, Jun 19, 2003 10:50 AM PDT

LOS ANGELES (Zap2it.com) - As cosmic signs go, this one wasn't subtle: If the set of your reality show sinks, maybe it was never meant to be. Ireland's state broadcaster RTE is rethinking the international syndication possibilities for the reality series "Cabin Fever" after the show's inaugural voyage hit the rocks last Friday (June 13). Literally.

Two weeks into a scheduled eight week run, the ship where the show was filming ran into rocks and visited Davy Jones' Locker off the northwest coast of Donegal, Ireland. The cast and crew and a large amount of expensive equipment were all onboard when the 90-foot, two-masted schooner went down.

Since the boat was in fairly shallow water, nobody was injured as they swam, waded and splashed to safety. Members of the crew actually stayed with the ship and had to be helicoptered to safety.

The show's producers refused to entirely eliminate the possibility for future installments of "Cabin Fever," though RTE was basing much of the show's syndication future on multiple uses of the tricked out boat which now rests at the bottom of the sea.

"The future of the program is being reviewed by RTE in consultation with the show's 10 contestants," the show's representatives tell The Hollywood Reporter. "This was a freak accident. We will review the options and make an announcement when we know what is going to happen."
