UC-Santa Cruz Boots 'Fraternity Life' Chapter
Tue, Jun 17, 2003 10:48 AM PDT

LOS ANGELES (Zap2it.com) - The Greek house to be featured in the next edition of MTV's "Fraternity Life" won't be around by the time the show premieres.

The University of California-Santa Cruz has "revoked recognition" of the Delta Omega Chi fraternity following an incident in which two members were accused of stealing a rare koi fish from a pond on campus. The fraternity can still operate off-campus, but it can never again use campus facilities.

"It was our determination that members of the fraternity were involved in concert with one another," UC-Santa Cruz spokesman Jim Burns tells the Santa Cruz Sentinel of the decision to boot the entire chapter rather than sanction individual members. DOC members Casey Loop and Matthew Cox admitted to taking the fish, the paper reports.

The fraternity says it's retained a lawyer and plans to fight the university's decision. "We have every right to be on this campus," member Joe Sanchis says.

The fish incident, which occurred last month, wasn't filmed for "Fraternity Life," but it did provoke an outcry at UC-Santa Cruz. The fraternity placed another koi in the pond, but that didn't stop someone from posting a sign nearby that reads "Pets ain't for eating, you [expletive]. ... Hannibal Lecter should fry up some frat boy for dinner."
