LOS ANGELES (Zap2it.com) - It's looking more and more like Simon Cowell will be back for a third season of "American Idol."
 
Despite comments after the second season's finale in May that he wouldn't be back, Cowell says he's negotiating with FOX about returning for the talent search's next edition, which will begin in early 2004, and he stands to get a substantial raise.
 
Appearing on Howard Stern's radio show Wednesday (June 25), Cowell at one point compared the popularity of himself and his fellow judges, Paula Abdul and Randy Jackson, to that of the "Friends" cast. He also answered "Yeah" when Stern asked if he would ask for $10 million to return to the show.
 
In a later interview, though, Cowell said he doesn't have a specific dollar amount in mind.
 
"I would never get that kind of money," he tells the New York Daily News. "I hate to come over as arrogant with these kinds of things. I'm never silly about these things. You take it year by year. I'm not trying to cash out at this point."  
 
Cowell's "gut feeling" is that he and FOX will be able to reach an agreement soon. His comments stand in contrast to statements he made in May, a few days after the second "American Idol" wrapped.
 
At that time, he told the L.A. morning show "Good Day Live" that he would "love to be able to say yes [to another season] ... but I can't. Why can't I say yes? I'll tell you what -- because I can't. And you know it's not about the money anymore."

Simon said in an interview on ET (I think) last night that AI wouldn't be the same without him.  Geesh  Personally I think that's more than a little arrogant.  Canadian Idol seems to be coming along quite well without Randy, Paul OR Simon.  Go figure.

I personally think that Simon and Paula and Randy make a great combination.  I liked having the guest judges this year too, however I did not care so much for the nights when the themes were for a specific singer or song writer.  Except of course the week it was Billy Joel cause he basically rocks.  I think his new show....cupid  looks ridulous.

This one won't be airing until next year, so it looks like he's sticking to that.
