'Idol' Singles Begin to Fall

LOS ANGELES (Zap2it.com) - After two weeks of being crazy in love with Clay Aiken and Ruben Studdard, the Billboard Hot 100 has a new top song. Former child of destiny Beyonce Knowles' single "Crazy in Love" grabbed the pole position as the "American Idol" finalists began their slide down the charts.
Clay Aiken's first single, "This is the Night" spent two weeks at No. 1 before slipping to No. 3 in the charts for the Saturday, July 12 issue. Rolling Stone coverboy Aiken also fell behind Lil' Kim's "Magic Stick," a catchy cut that features rapper 50 Cent.

Aiken's dip was minimal compared to the plight of the FOX talent show's most recent champion. The World's Velvet Teddybear went all the way down to No. 13 with "Flying Without Wings." That put Studdard behind last year's "Idol" champion Kelly Clarkson, whose "Miss Independent" is at No. 12.

In terms of longevity, "Miss Independent" is in its ninth week of release. Clarkson's hit is also No. 1 on the Top 40 chart. Interestingly, Aiken's single broke in on the Adult Contemporary chart, appearing at No. 20.

In unrelated "Idol" news, according to media reports, the Aiken and Studdard albums will not debut simultaneously in August as had earlier been reported. Neither album has a set drop date, but the releases will be staggered.
