Backstage on the 'Idol' Tour July 15, 2003 It's been almost two months since "American Idol" mesmerized viewers with its white-knuckle season finale, so ET decided to find out what those crazy kids are up to now. With the exception of Marine JOSHUA GRACIN, all the finalists -- CLAY AIKEN, KIMBERLY CALDWELL, JULIA DeMATO, CHARLES GRIGSBY, KIMBERLEY LOCKE, CARMEN RASMUSEN, RICKEY SMITH, TRENYCE and, of course, RUUU-BEN STUDDARD -- kicked off their 39-city tour last week and are singing their hearts out from now through the end of August. We caught up with the singing sensations in Columbus, OH, where Kimberly Caldwell offered to show us out what really goes on backstage at the "Pop Tarts Presents American Idol Live!" tour -- including a peek inside the Velvet Teddy Bear's closet. "Let's see if we can find some of Ruben's stuff," she whispers conspiratorially, before tugging on an oversized black blazer worn by the big guy. "It's a little big!" she crows. As you might expect, "Idol" shows include more of the poppy hits of yesteryear mixed with today's chartbusting tunes. Julia performs a vocal track of CHRISTINA AGUILERA's "Beautiful," while Rickey struts to MICHAEL JACKSON's "The Way You Make Me Feel." Self-styled country crooner Carmen warbles SHANIA TWAIN's "Up!" while Kimberly Caldwell rocks out on STACIE ORRICO's "Stuck." Of course the, real showstoppers are the pride of Alabama -- Ruben -- and his string-bean runner-up. Despite the fact that they both have scorching singles on the Billboard charts -- Clay's "This is the Night" became the best-selling U.S. single of the year while Ruben's "Flying Without Wings" continues to nip right at his heels -- they insist there is no rivalry between them. In fact, their debut albums were originally set to spar on Aug. 19, but have now been pushed back to separate dates sometime in September. "Neither one of us really wanted our albums to come out at the same time," Clay explains in his Southern twang. "I'm gonna buy his album as soon as it drops and he better come get mine as soon as it's out too!" One piece of "Idol" gear that's sure to be a stocking stuffer this holiday season -- an honest-to-goodness Velvet Teddy Bear, inspired by the one and only Ruben, of course.
