It's Clear Viewers Like 'Queer,' Get Used to It
(Wednesday, July 16 10:42 PM)

LOS ANGELES (Zap2it.com) - Bravo's gay-themed makeover show "The Queer Eye for the Straight Guy" drew record ratings in its premiere on Tuesday night (July 15). The show performed particularly well in coveted young adult demographics and provided triple-digit time period growth.

Overall, the premiere, which ran from 10-11 p.m. ET, drew 1.64 million viewers. Among adults 25-54, the show attracted nearly 1.17 million.

The 25-54 numbers represent an 804 percent increase over Bravo's demographic average for the 2002-3 season and a 657 percent improvement on what Bravo shows had been doing in the time slot.

The series, which features a Fab Five of gay lifestyle experts making over slovenly straight men, helped Bravo rise to No. 2 among ad-supported cable networks for the hour. Only MTV, with "Real World Paris" and "The Osbournes" did better. For the season, Bravo comes in at No. 38 for the hour.

"Its great when everything comes together -- a terrific show, great reviews and now fantastic ratings. This is an example of the new energy at Bravo and the first of what we hope will be lots of ratings records to come," says Jeff Gaspin, the network's president.

Yet another one from Bravo:  Boy Meets Boy.  This one will be done in BB genre with gays and a smattering of straights.

Sorry, but I didn't think it was PC to show the straight couple on BB4 yesterday doin' the deed and I don't want to see gays doing it either.

I watched Queer Eye and it was funny as hell.  They really did a great job on both of the guys and gave some great tips during the show.

I don't have a problem with Bravo's programming leaning towards the gay community.  I think it's about time especially since we have "female programming" on Lifetime and WE and now "male programming" on TNN.  One of my male gay friends was offended, however, that they're putting straight guys in with the gay guys on BMB.  He said, "it's not like we don't have it hard enough already even when we know the guy is gay."

Yeah I find that to be a pretty unreasonable twist.  They should not be putting any straight men in BMB.. that's just cruel.

That could be a very bad mix indeed - and dangerous.  What if one of the straight guys is a major homophobic and goes ballistic?

My son saw the "Queer" show too but thought it was a bit boring and he couldn't just get into it.  He told me he's excited for BMB to premiere and I told him I was going to give it a shot but didn't care for the premise.  He laughed and told me not to go all "hommy" on him.  He didn't know about the "straight/gay" factor.  Let's just say - he thought that could be a bit to dicey too.
