LOS ANGELES (Zap2it.com) - The start of FOX's 2003-04 season is less than two weeks away, but viewers won't see most of the network's lineup until late October.

As has been the case for the past couple of years, FOX is forced to be a little more creative in rolling out its new schedule because of its commitment to covering the major league baseball playoffs and World Series. Since baseball eats up most of primetime in October, the network doesn't want to premiere all its shows in the traditional late-September launch time, show them once or twice more and then yank them for a month.

The baseball playoffs begin Tuesday, Sept. 30, with the World Series scheduled to start Saturday, Oct. 18.

FOX has high hopes for freshman drama "The O.C." and is thus launching it Tuesday, Aug. 5. It will air for several weeks in the summer, go away during October and return in its regular home, 9 p.m. ET Thursdays, on Oct. 30. The network's Friday and Saturday shows will debut in September and could be pre-empted some during the playoffs.
Everything else, including second editions of "Joe Millionaire" and "American Juniors," will premiere in late October. There has been some speculation that "Juniors" could be bumped for "The Simple Life," a reality take on "Green Acres," but for now the kiddie talent search remains on the schedule.

Second-year comedy "Oliver Beene," which has the 7 p.m. Sunday spot, will be held back until after the NFL season ends, as it would have likely been pre-empted by football coverage numerous times anyway.
