HBO Taps Third Season of 'The Wire'

LOS ANGELES (Zap2it.com) - That sound you hear is a collective "Whoo-hoo!" from the nation's TV critics.

HBO has picked up "The Wire" for a third season. The cable network ordered 12 more episodes of the complex cop drama to begin production early next year.

"We love it, and every episode just affirms our love more and more," HBO executive vice president Carolyn Strauss tells The Hollywood Reporter. "It's gotten better and better and better, and we have been more and more gratified by the continuing audience and critical appreciation for the show."

"The Wire" has received huge amounts of critical praise, although it was snubbed in the Emmy nominations. The show has also developed a fairly loyal audience and averages roughly 3.5 million viewers per episode.
The show follows a team of Baltimore cops who butt up against indifferent superiors and outdated equipment in trying to make a case, while giving equal time to their targets. The current season has focused on union corruption, drug trade and the deaths of 14 illegal immigrants found on the city's docks.

A premiere date for "The Wire's" third season hasn't been set.
