'Boy Meets Boy' Contestant Discharged from Navy
(Monday, August 25 10:31 AM)

LOS ANGELES (Zap2it.com) - Gone are the days when the Village People could prance around the stage urging fans to join their fellow man in the Navy. The cop and the construction worker wouldn't last a minute in today's Navy. Michael Jason Tiner, a combat systems instructor with eight years of military experience, was discharged from the Navy after he came out to the basic cable nation on the Bravo reality show "Boy Meets Boy."

Tiner, who taught at the Navy's Submarine Learning Center in San Diego, was one of the first men eliminated from the show. The first episode of "Boy Meets Boy" aired on July 29 and Tiner's discharge for violating the military's "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy was made official on Aug. 19.

"The reason I did the show is that I felt if anyone had a right to go on the show, then I did," Tiner tells a reporter from the gay-lesbian-centric Window Media publications. "I should have all the rights that the other 14 guys have. I was comfortable enough with who I am and with my sexuality that I was ready to face the consequences."

"Boy Meets World" finds a single gay man choosing between 15 singles. Eight of the men are gay and if leading man James chooses one of them, they win a romantic vacation. If he chooses one of the seven straight men, the person chosen wins a cash prize. James is currently down to three men, two of whom are gay.

The process leading to Tiner's dismissal began when he was recognized by a fellow sailor in the show's promos. Tiner soon informed his command of his participation in the show, leading to his honorable discharge.

i know that my opinion is not shared with the higher ups in the armed forces (at least not the majority) but THIS SUCKS!  i still don't understand the armed forces turning people out because of sexuality.  no explanation that i have ever heard makes sense.  if someone wants to serve his/her country, he/she should be allowed to do so.  i see all these people saying "support out troops'; i guess that just means the straight ones...  Wink

"Don't ask, Don't tell" is the policy.

I agree with eeschein, anyone willing to defend our country should be able to, however when the contestant signed up with the Navy he knew the policy... and he did receive an honorable discharge.
