LOS ANGELES (Zap2it.com) - The producers of "American Idol" are going farther afield than they ever have in the past to find would-be pop stars.

The show will travel to Honolulu in late September for the final set of auditions for its third edition, expected on FOX in January. San Francisco has also been added to the talent competition's itinerary.

Auditions have already taken place in Los Angeles, New York, Atlanta and Houston.

The San Francisco auditions will take place the week of Sept. 21. Specific dates and locations haven't been determined; the show's web site, About 50,000 people from across the country auditioned for the second "American Idol." Birmingham, Ala., native Ruben Studdard emerged from that crowd to win the competition in an extremely close decision over North Carolinian Clay Aiken.
