Almost 18 million fans tuned in to watch the final appearance of the late John Ritter Tueswday night on ABC's Eight Simple Rules. The show was the most-watched program that night, even beating out the baseball playoffs...

I watched it and it was so sad at the end when they did that tribute to him.  Does anyone know what they are going to do for the rest of the season?

I came across this blurb written on September 17, 2003.
 

 
A day after John Ritter's funeral in Los Angeles, ABC has decided to stick with the show he starred in, "8 Simple Rules for Dating My Teenage Daughter," although a network executive said his role would not be recast.
 
"After much introspection and discussion with all parties involved, we decided we are going forward," Lloyd Braun, ABC Entertainment chairman said in a conference call yesterday. He said the show will premiere in its regular 8 p.m. slot Tuesday and will remain there three weeks - the number of episodes shot before Ritter's death last week - before going into hiatus.
 
Braun said it was "unclear" when the show will return, but that "writers are going to be going back shortly and we expect to be back in production sometime in the next three to four weeks."

James Garner is joining the cast of 8 Simple Rules for four
episodes. Garner will play the father of the newly widowed
Cate Hennessy, who helps her cope with the death of her
husband, the part played by the late John Ritter.......

LOS ANGELES, California (Reuters) -- Veteran television actress Suzanne Pleshette will join comedy "8 Simple Rules for Dating My Teenage Daughter" to help fill the void left by the death of the show's star John Ritter, ABC said Friday.  
 
ABC, owned by Walt Disney Co., vowed to continue the comedy after Ritter's sudden death on September 11, and Ritter's final episodes, shown after his death, were ratings hits.  
 
Pleshette, co-star of the 1970s series "The Bob Newhart Show," and James Garner, star of "Maverick" and "The Rockford Files," will appear as the parents of widow Cate Hennessy, played by Katey Sagal, and grandparents to her teenage children.  
 
The grandparents are separated but put aside their differences to comfort the family after the unexpected death of Paul Hennessy, Cate's husband who had been played by Ritter.  
 
Pleshette and Garner will join the show for a one-hour special on November 4, the first post-Ritter show. Garner is slated to continue for at least the following three episodes.  
 
Pleshette left NBC's "Good Morning Miami," after starring in the first season of the show last year.  
 
She played Emily Hartley, the wife of comedian Bob Newhart's character, Bob Hartley, in "The Bob Newhart Show" which ran from 1972 to 1978.
