Clay Aiken Update

"American Idol" runner-up CLAY AIKEN's life has become a whirlwind -- and it's only speeding up. During one day of his promotional blitz for his new album, Measure of a Man, he was mobbed by fans at every turn. Radio appearances in Los Angeles give way to a video shoot for his new single. Before jetting off to New York, the North Carolina boy revealed that his squeaky clean image is just fine with him. "No music I have ever really connected with has been about sex, or have inappropriate language in the songs. The songs I connect with have emotion to them and tell a story. That's the type of stuff I want to sing anyway."

Clay's Big Day

October 14, 2003
CLAY AIKEN is one busy boy, especially since his CD, Measure of a Man,, hit stores today. He is making the usual round of talk shows and such, and ET was with the former special-education teacher as he visited one of L.A.'s top radio stations, KIIS-FM. On tonight's ET, we'll show you how North Carolina's favorite son is handling his fame.

Meanwhile, thousands of his fans held parties in his honor, and at the stroke of midnight bombarded record stores to buy his album. The goal of the fans attending the 90 parties was to make their favorite singer's album go platinum in one day -- and they may just succeed! Stay tuned for more news when the music-buying stats are released. The album's first single is "Invincible," which Clay calls a "catchy" tune.

All this is something to brag about, keeping in mind that the former "American Idol" contender only came in second in the competition, losing out to RUBEN STUDDARD by 1 percent of the vote. Since then, however, Clay has more than made up the gap. His cover of Rolling Stone became the biggest-selling issue in the past five years; his single, "This is the Night," not only went platinum, but was the biggest-selling single since ELTON JOHN's re-working of "Candle in the Wind" to honor PRINCESS DIANA; and his single has already topped Billboard's charts for two weeks running.

Clay also appears on the RCA compilation American Idol -- The Great Holiday Classics, also released today, and will perform with other "American Idol" contestants, including KELLY CLARKSON, JUSTIN GUARINI, CHRISTINA CHRISTIAN, TAMYRA GRAY, KIMBERLEY LOCKE and, of course, Ruben, when FOX broadcasts "American Idol: Christmas Songs," Tuesday, Nov. 25, at 8 p.m.
