Ryan Seacrest's Idol Education by Daniel R. Coleridge Since American Idol began, the Fox show has been plucking nobodies from obscurity and whipping them into somebodies with star power. Just look at AI's dandy host, Ryan Seacrest. The guy went from a local DJ in L.A. to emceeing bigger gigs, like last night's Radio Music Awards on NBC. And soon, he'll take on TRL's Carson Daly with his very own talk-music show, On Air with Ryan Seacrest. Still, his close association with a starmaking series does have its drawbacks... "It's become a part of my everyday life, whether I'm checking in my bags at the airport or I'm in a restaurant," the 28-year-old says. "I was in a nice steakhouse in New York, and before the waiter even introduced himself, he starting singing a tune right there!" Do such impromptu auditions freak him out? If so, Seacrest is too sunny to say so. "The whole restaurant gave him a standing ovation," he says. "I think it's fantastic that people have gotten so into the show!" No word on whether the singing waiter ever landed himself an Idol audition. Or at least a decent tip. "There are more people than ever wanting to participate [in AI]," Seacrest points out. "After year one, you see Kelly Clarkson continuing to release singles and do well on the radio, so the show has a different level of credibility and validity that the kids who are auditioning can recognize. This show is a pretty quick way to stardom and becoming a household name." Rarely has there been a better example of such fantasy fulfillment than watching nerdy runner-up Clay Aiken transform into a pop star before our eyes. And smart wannabes are taking notes. "What American Idol allows a young artist to do is build a fan base," Seacrest says. "Clay, amazingly, was kicked off our show and was brought back as a Wild Card, reinvented his image and his style, and won over men and women in the teen and 18-49 demographics. It proved there was an appetite for a young, mainstream, sort of wholesome artist that is like a young, new Barry Manilow. The kid is extremely savvy and talented, and he knows how to embrace this ride that has become fame for him."
