Smart Edges Lynch in TV-Movie Face-Off
(Monday, November 10 02:18 PM)

LOS ANGELES (Zap2it.com) - CBS' movie about Elizabeth Smart's kidnapping beat NBC's film about Pfc. Jessica Lynch's rescue Sunday (Nov. 9), but all that may tell us is that "The Elizabeth Smart Story" had a stronger lead-in.

Both movies did well for their networks, with CBS winning the race for total viewers and the two movies tying among adults 18-49, the demographic group favored by many advertisers.

"The Elizabeth Smart Story" averaged about 15.7 million viewers and a 5.4 rating in the 18-49 set. NBC's "Saving Jessica Lynch" scored the same 18-49 rating and drew about 14.9 million people, according to preliminary Nielsen numbers. Final figures are due Tuesday. (CBS' movie started about a half-hour late because the network's late NFL game bled into primetime.)

CBS was naturally pleased about its victory, but NBC put a positive spin on the results as well, and didn't really have to resort to Baghdad Bob-style creativity to do so.

"Saving Jessica Lynch" posted the highest rating among adults 18-49 -- which is how NBC measures its success -- of any original movie on the network since "Growing Up Brady" in May 2000. It also did significantly better than the net's season average for the 9 to 11 p.m. period.

I watched most of the Elizabeth Smart story.  I thought they did a pretty good job of matching most of the roles with actors that looked like them, with the exception of Elizabeth.  I thought the girl they picked to play her looked nothing like Elizabeth personally and that drew me out of it a little bit.

I tried to switch back and forth between the two.  Neither held my interest - I must have watched something else or fell asleep.
