Second 'Surreal Life' Has Vanilla Flava
(Tuesday, October 21 03:11 PM)

LOS ANGELES (Zap2it.com) - The WB has cast the second edition of "The Surreal Life," and the best punchline imaginable is just to let you know who they are.
Living together for the next two weeks while the show shoots will be former "CHiPs" star Erik Estrada, televangelism scandal figure Tammy Faye Messner, "Real World: Las Vegas" cast member Trishelle Cannatella, porn legend Ron "The Hedgehog" Jeremy, ex-"Baywatch" beach bunny Traci Bingham and Rob Van Winkle. You may know him as Vanilla Ice.

And yes, Vanilla Ice is getting Hammer's bedroom from the first show.

As with the first "Surreal Life," the six sorta celebrities will shack up together at Glen Campbell's old pad for about two weeks, which will be shown over six episodes. The group will be sent on field trips to interact with folks in the non-surreal realm.
New to the mix this time will be a series of guest stars -- five in all -- who will each spend a day or two at the "Surreal" house. The WB isn't revealing the names of any of the guests as it wants to surprise the full-time cast members.

The show will air at midseason, though a specific premiere hasn't been set.

'Surreal Life' Swings to WB's Sunday

'Surreal Life' Swings to WB's Sunday
(Tuesday, November 25 12:00 PM)

LOS ANGELES (Zap2it.com) - Good night, "Tarzan." Say hello to Ron Jeremy on your way out.

The WB has decided to place the second season of "The Surreal Life," wherein several marginally famous people share a house, "Real World"-style, for a few weeks, in the post-"Charmed" spot on Sunday nights in January. The series will make its debut at 9 p.m. ET Jan. 11.

Episodes will expand from 30 minutes to an hour this time around as the show chronicles two weeks in the life of no-longer-a-rapper Vanilla Ice, porn star Ron Jeremy, former televangelist/curiosity Tammy Faye Messner, "Baywatch" beauty Traci Bingham, "CHiPs" and telenovela star Erik Estrada and "Real World: Las Vegas" girl Trishelle Cannatella.

The network has also let slip the identities of the "special guests" who will drop by country singer Glen Campbell's pad to visit the "Surreal" crew. They include Gary Coleman, eighth-place finisher in California's October recall election; Coleman's "Diff'rent Strokes" castmate Todd Bridges; and Motley Crue singer Vince Neil, who took part in the first edition of the show.

Cameras will follow the six housemates and their guests as they attend Tammy Faye's book signing, work at a famous Sunset Strip restaurant and visit a nudist colony, among other things.

"The Surreal Life" is moving into the timeslot vacated by "Tarzan," which is officially on hiatus but has dim prospects for a return to the schedule.

Reality Check Column: Is 'Life' mindless? Yes. Fun? You bet!
Jason Miller

The phrase "Mindless Entertainment" appeared at the end of the credits after the first episode of "The Surreal Life" on the WB this week.

Mindless Entertainment is the company that produces the reality show that places B-list celebrities in a house and tapes everything they do for 12 days. The results, of course, are intended to be entertaining.

Put Rob "Vanilla Ice" Van Winkle, Erik "Ponch" Estrada, Traci Bingham, Tammy Faye Messner (formerly Baker), Ron Jeremy and Trishelle Canatella (who?) in a house and who knows what will happen, right?

The first episode didn't disappoint.

A few of the highlights included:

• Former "Baywatch" babe Bingham throwing a fit because the bath tub in the house wasn't a color that she liked (it was raspberry colored, by the way).

• Estrada accusing Bingham (who was throwing a huge fit over pretty much everything in the house) of being a spy sent in by the WB to cause problems in the house (hilarious).

• Vanilla Ice talking about aliens from outer space in the hot tub.

• Trishelle bonding with Tammy Faye.

• Ice getting really upset over not being able to find Jimmy Dean sausage at the grocery store.

• Ice, who was on fire (not literally) most of the show, calling Estrada "Hasselhoff" during an argument. Keep in mind that hearing the words David Hasselhoff makes me laugh every time. I can't help but picture him singing when the Berlin Wall came down or running in slow motion on the beach in those red shorts or even leading his team to the 1985 Super Bowl. Oh, wait, that was Dan Marino. My bad.

But, seriously folks, I enjoyed the show. I laughed out loud a few times.

It was quite entertaining. Was it mindless? Of course. But it was fun. Now why did I tune in? As far as I can see, the show really has no point at all.

Maybe it's my sentimental attachment to Vanilla Ice. "To The Extreme," after all, was the first CD I ever bought. I'm not proud of it, but it was.

Maybe I wanted to find out who this Trishelle Canatella person was. After doing some extensive research (an Internet search), I found out that she was on "The Real World: Las Vegas" on MTV.

Maybe I wanted to see Ron Jeremy carrying on a conversation with Tammy Faye.

Or maybe it's because I (like many other reality TV watchers) enjoy bad television.

Lets' face it. Reality television shows serve no other purpose than to provide mindless entertainment. And "The Surreal Life" does it quite well.
