LOS ANGELES (Zap2it.com) - Casting for aliens is underway for the highly anticipated "Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy."

Actors Bill Nighy and Martin Freeman are set to star as an alien and an earthling, respectively, according to reports from the BBC.

"Guide" is based on the novel by Douglas Adams of the same name, which follows the adventures of Arthur Dent (Freeman) after he is the only human to escape the destruction of Earth by the Vogons, who intend to use it for hyperspace freeway development.

Dent befriends a galactic roving reporter who writes for the "Guide" and meets other strange aliens along the way, such as planetary architect Slartibartfast (Nighy).

"I'm a big fan of the book and the people who are making it are very cool people and I think they're going to do a good job," Nighy says. "It's a really good script. It's really, really faithful. All the jokes are there and they're big fat jokes. It's wonderful. And with all the technology we have now, it can not only be a big satisfying comedy but I figure it could be quite exciting as well."

"Guide" is slated to begin shooting in London next year under the direction of Garth Jennings.

Nighy recently appeared in "Underworld" and "Love Actually" alongside Freeman, who is perhaps best known for his role as Tim in the BBC's hit comedy series "The Office."

I am a huge fan of these books and am just thrilled to see them back in action. I was deeply saddend when he passed away and his wife immediately shut down work on the film he was making.

Doh! That's what I get for reading old posts. I read the first one and was excited only to be let down. Sad

I remember watching the old BBC series on HHG2TG. It was campy in a Dr. Who/Red Dwarf sort of vein but I still liked it.
