Our Canadian Idol

Canadian Idol winner Ryan Malcolm was in Winnipeg this week talking about his new album, looking out the window and eating at Earls.

FROM the 12th floor of downtown's Radisson Hotel, Ryan Malcolm's view of Winnipeg is one of snow-covered warehouse buildings, empty lots and parking garages.
"It looks pretty industrial," says the Canadian Idol contest winner, in town yesterday to talk about his album, Home.

The view of the area north of Portage Avenue has nothing to do with the pop singer's perception of the city however. That's because musicians from this town played a surprisingly large role in his solo debut, co-writing, performing or producing six of the disc's 15 songs.

The Winnipeg crew behind Home included Guess Who guitarist Randy Bachman, Watchmen guitarist Joe Serlin, tunesmiths Luke McMaster and Rob (Toomer) James and hip-hop producer Darcy Ataman, who uses the studio handle Tranny Wu.

"Winnipeg's a really supportive city for music, from what I can see," says Malcolm, who had no prior acquaintance with the Manitobans or any of the 30 musicians assembled for a week-long songwriting marathon in Toronto back in the fall.

"It was a lot of pressure. I didn't know if these guys could get where I wanted to go in the music. I didn't know if they were going to make me come across on the album." A strong sense of self is a surprising priority for a member of the Idol franchise, the 21st century's answer to Star Search. As the recent World Idol contest showed, prime-time-friendly pop -- aimed at an audience that normally doesn't pay attention to music -- sounds the same wherever you go, whether it's the U.S., the Netherlands or South Africa.

Malcolm, however, sees himself as more of rock 'n' roll singer than a purveyor of sappy pop.

"I don't do fluffy," he says. "When the management company that manages all the Idols heard my album, they were a little afraid. They were expecting fluffy music.

"This is my first album and I wanted to make sure it represents me."

Malcolm is honest about his goals. The Kingston, Ont. native, whose last non-musical job was waiting tables at his father's restaurant, wants to be on the radio, sell records and have a long career in music.

Getting his start on a TV show won't hamper that goal, he says. He doesn't seem daunted by a pop music highway littered with the stalled careers of various Popstars and Making The Band vehicles. "I don't think it matters, as long you put out quality records. I think I have just as much chance of being forgotten as if I didn't win. The fact so many people know the show and know who I am is a big boost.

"Once there's another Canadian Idol, (I'll be) Ryan Malcolm the artist. That's something Kelly (Clarkson) down in the U.S. has had a problem with. But that's not really a problem -- she's selling lots of records, she's doing tours. She's huge.

"The beauty is, people chose us, and they're the ones who listen to the music and buy the records and go to the concerts. It's a winning combination and you can't really lose with that."

Ryan Malcolm's multimedia synergy already includes TV and radio. He'll add live concerts in March, when he tours Canada with a six-piece band. A Winnipeg date should be announced by February.

"Ryan the TV guy is usually a pretty big joker. I'm usually a ham for the camera. When I'm on stage singing, it's going to be intense, because that's what I love to do.

"Now, I'll be singing my own stuff. That's important to me, to sing songs nobody else has sung before."

Malcolm will begin rehearsals for the tour soon after he flies back to Toronto. He won't have time to relax and enjoy some of the things he used to do before he became a Canadian Idol, like downhill skiing.

"I'm becoming a wuss. Why do I want to go out and freeze my butt off? I'd rather sit by the fire and drink hot chocolate or a glass of wine and look outside and enjoy it from the inside."

Ryan Malcolm seems to enjoy his views. And, he points out, he didn't just see parking garages and warehouses during his time in Winnipeg. "I went for dinner at Earls on Monday night," he beams. "Their waitresses are beautiful."

A restaurant chain worthy of idol worship, indeed.

"Senility Prayer"...God grant me...
The senility to forget the people I never liked
The good fortune to run into the ones that I do
And the eyesight to tell the difference."
