CBS taking 'CSI' to New York
Network working hard to keep 'Raymond,' offers look at new 'Survivor'

Hollywood - TV's alphabet soup will get even thicker this fall, with "CSI: New York" - a spinoff of "CSI" and "CSI: Miami" - on the CBS menu for September.

CBS CEO Leslie Moonves noted to television critics Saturday that rival NBC has done better than OK with "Law & Order" spinoffs "L&O: SVU" and "L&O: CI," so Y - er, why - not a third "CSI"?

The original "CSI," a fast-paced, somewhat gory forensics drama set in Las Vegas, toppled NBC's "ER" as TV's No. 1 drama, with "CSI: Miami" also doing consistently well in the ratings.

A third version has been on the back burner for some time, according to Moonves, with Chicago, New Orleans and San Francisco all considered as the settings.

But, despite New York City's notoriously high production costs, "Mayor (Michael) Bloomberg and his office have been wonderful" about smoothing the way for "CSI: NY," Moonves said, adding that he expected some interiors to be shot in Los Angeles but hoped that much of the shooting could be done in New York.

The principal cast of "CSI: NY," which has not been named, will be introduced in a May episode of the Las Vegas "CSI."

In other CBS programming news, Moonves announced midseason premiere dates of March 16 for "Century City," a futuristic legal drama with Hector Elizondo, Nestor Carbonell and Welsh actor Ioan Gruffudd, and March 17 for "The Stones," a comedy with Judith Light and Robert Klein.

He also announced that freshman comedy "Two and a Half Men" has received an early renewal for the 2004-'05 season, as have new dramas "Cold Case," "Joan of Arcadia" and "NCIS."

Continuing the alphabetical theme, the CEO said he would "bet a lot of money" that "NCIS" progenitor "JAG" would also return in September.

The big unknown for CBS this September is the perennially popular "Everybody Loves Raymond," whose star and executive producer, Ray Romano, has talked about walking in May.

"We've been working hard" to keep Romano, said Moonves, for whom the show is hugely profitable.

One strategy has been to remind Romano that, if he leaves this year, his farewell could go all but unnoticed amid the fuss over the departing "Friends," "Frasier" and "Sex and the City."

"We've told him, 'We'll give you awards! We'll give you dinners! We'll super-size you! We'll do whatever you want!' "
