'Real People' Lives Again
(Tuesday, January 20 11:40 AM)

LOS ANGELES (Zap2it.com) - "Real People," the ain't-America-wacky series that was a Top 20 hit for NBC in the early 1980s, is getting new life as a syndicated series.

George Schlatter, the Emmy-winning producer who created the show in 1979, has worked out a deal with Tribune Entertainment and "Weakest Link" executive producer Phil Gurin to bring back "Real People" as either a weekly or daily show in 2005. (Tribune Entertainment and Zap2it.com are both owned by the Tribune Co.)

"When it was originally on NBC, you laughed and you cried, and I am going to want to make sure that you feel that way again," Gurin tells The Hollywood Reporter. "This is a show in the tradition of great reality shows."

"Real People," which featured a team of correspondents (including Fred Willard, Sarah Purcell and Peter Billingsley) traveling the country in search of goofy, inspirational or just plain bizarre stories, aired from 1979-84 and was nominated for Emmys in 1980 and '81. Its influence can be seen in everything from "America's Funniest Home Videos" to David Letterman's Stupid Pet Tricks to "The Daily Show's" field reports.

Gurin and Schlatter will serve as executive producers of the new series. It's expected to launch as either a weekly hour or daily half-hour series.
