The head of Little People of America isn't pleased with the twist in the new Fox reality show "The Littlest Groom."

LPA president Matt Roloff told the Daily News that the show's plan to have averaged-sized women compete against little women for a 4-foot-5-inch bachelor could be demeaning to his members.

"When I talked to the producers of 'The Littlest Groom,' I was adamant that they not mix average-sized people and little people," said Roloff, whose Portland, Ore.-based organization represents the interests of the vertically challenged.

Roloff was concerned that if the bachelor reaches for an averaged-sized woman - "the little women will feel inferior."

"It could be detrimental to our psyche," he said.

The show starts out with the short bachelor going on a series of dates with women his size.

Averaged-sized women are then thrown into the mix before he makes a final selection.

The show's executive producer, Eric Schotz, said the setup reflects the lives of the participants, short or tall.

"Averaged-sized people are a part of their lives," Schotz said. "All of them had dated little people and average-sized people. One little woman on the show had never dated a little person."

Roloff acknowledged that he hasn't seen "The Littlest Groom," which airs on Feb. 16 and 23.

And he praised LMNO Productions for seeking out his organization for pointers on how the show could be sensitive to the needs of little people, such as "making sure they had stools and how to greet them at the airport."

"They made more of an attempt than normal to try to be supportive," he said.

The company isn't the first to show up at his office. The flood of reality TV shows has created a demand for little people. Roloff said he's getting a request every week from producers trying to find them for their shows.

He's even done one himself. Cameras were recently rolling as he and his wife shared their home with a normal-sized family for an extended stay.

Roloff said he understands the fascination with little people and believes the shows can end up being helpful in gaining mainstream acceptance for them.

"The more we're exposed in real settings," he said, "the less we're going to be stared at."

'The Littlest Groom' Is Lookin' For Love!

February 9, 2004
FOX is out to prove that love really does come in all sizes in "The Littlest Groom." The two-part special goes where no other reality show has gone before by helping a little person find true love with a woman of his own stature -- with a few surprising twists on the way!

On tonight's ET, we have a look inside the unique, dating game special!

Four-foot-five-inch tall GLEN is a salesman seeking romance, and in the first hour of the special, airing Monday, February 16 (8 p.m. EST/PST), he's introduced to 12 women of his size who are all hoping Glen is "The One."

On their lookout for love, they go on group adventures as well as one-on-one dates. During trips to the park, romantic strolls and fun games of golf, Glen will be getting to know the ladies in hopes of narrowing it down to one lifelong mate. But just when the 23-year-old thinks he's gotten over the hard part and eliminated some of the ladies, his decision becomes more difficult as he's waylaid by women of average height who unexpectedly enter the dating pool.

Will Glen determine that someone of his own size is more compatible? Or will his destiny lie with a woman who towers over him? It's all decided on the second part of "The Littlest Groom," airing Monday, February 23rd (8 p.m. EST/PST).

For a look inside the next sure-to-please reality show, tune in to tonight's ET!

It's interesting to me as well, and I think that's largely because this is a culture that really has been kept out of the public eye a lot.  For a time we had a gal who worked in our office who was a little people and I really liked her.  I am a curious person by nature, but I know to keep my curious mouth shut in a lot of social settings Wink because people can absolutely take offense at plain old curiousity.  I remember one time she picked me up for lunch and I never said this to her, but I was just dying of curiosity to see how her car worked.  I certainly never meant it as a rude thing and didn't mention it to her out of concern that she would think it was rude, but I was fascinated with it and thought the whole pedals thing was very cool.  For me this show has a little bit of that same curiosity of seeing how things work and just wanting to know more about the culture and society of little people, since it's not something I am normally exposed to.  I think while sometimes it can come across as offensive, curiosity is a good thing.  it's only by learning and being exposed to new things that as a whole we lose fears and misconceptions about people who are different from us.

The Ladies of 'The Littlest Groom'

February 11, 2004
"The Littlest Groom," the new FOX reality miniseries, is out to prove love really does come in all sizes. The two-part special goes where no other reality show has gone before by helping a little person find true love with a woman of his own stature -- with a few surprising twists on the way!

On tonight's ET, we introduce you to a few of the hopeful women, including KAAREN, who describes her perfect mate this way:

"My ideal man is somebody who's driven, who's comfortable with themselves, a hard worker, romantic -- I like romance in my life. And somebody who's my friend and is honest with me and themselves."

LEANN, who has dated mostly little men and is looking for a man who wants children, says she did the show because she likes meeting new people. "If a guy came along and wasn't a little person but had all the qualities I look for in a gentleman, I would overlook that."

And fellow lady-in-waiting JENNIFER says her perfect date would be a simple outing -- even a trip to Del Taco would be fine by her! She also says she wanted to be a part of the series simply for the enjoyment of it. "I did this show to go out and have some fun. I'm not looking for anyone in particular, it just sounded fun to me."

But raven-haired MARGARET knows exactly what kind of man she's looking for. "I normally date guys who have an outgoing personality, who are spontaneous, and an all-around good guy. I do date guys who are very attractive. I'm a sucker for gorgeous guys and a cute smile -- what can I say?"

MIKA feels that there are many advantages to being a little person and feels that her ideal mate "is a guy who can jump into any situation and adapt to it, whether it's going to a club in L.A. or going camping. And he has to be down-to-earth."

Four-foot-five-inch tall GLEN is the bachelor the ladies are ready to woo, and in the first hour of the special, airing Monday, February 16 (8 p.m. EST/PST), he's introduced to 12 women of his size who are all hoping Glen is "The One." But after romantic one-on-one dates and fun group activities, the 23-year-old's decision becomes more difficult when women of average height unexpectedly enter the dating pool.

Will Glen determine that someone of his own size is more compatible? Or will his destiny lie with a woman who towers over him? It's all decided on the second part of "The Littlest Groom," airing Monday, February 23rd (8 p.m. EST/PST).

Watch tonight's ET for more on the little ladies of "The Littlest Groom"!

I saw the very end but other then that I didn't see or hear much about it. Apparently it's only a two episode special, so I wouldn't qualify it as a real reality show.
