It's a Texas Rose for 'The Bachelor'
(Monday, May 16 10:52 PM)
By Brill Bundy

LOS ANGELES (Zap2it.com) Last we saw old Charlie O'Connell, he was wooing Sarah B., Sarah W. and Krisily on the sandy beaches of Aruba. He acted like an indulgent big brother to the latter and admitted to having quite the crush on the first. This left Sarah W. the odd woman out, and the Not-As-Beautiful-As-She-Thinks one ended up getting sent back to LA to be reabsorbed by the ocean of females just like her.
Well, Monday (May 16) night we're back for the live finale. Because nothing says ratings bait like breaking some poor woman's heart in front of a studio audience. But not until the two contenders get to take a trip to Montauk to meet Charlie's friends and family.

Krisily is up first and in the past two weeks Charlie seems to have suddenly done an about face toward her. Where previously Krisily seemed nothing more than a foil for Sarah W.'s issues, Charlie is now going on and on about how much he respects and admires her willingness to put herself out there and potentially be hurt.

Before they make the rounds, Charlie and Krisily sit on the beach and she airs the always-present discomfort of being insecure because there's still another woman in the equation. Charlie gives the usual answer about how "it's not fair, but it is what it is."
Way to be reassuring.

First up are drinks with Charlie's friends Steve, Frank and Jack. They all think she's great, but really, how hard is it to get along for the duration of a beer? She's young, she's cute and she doesn't vocalize any wacky opinions. Let's move on.

Dinner with mom and dad comes next. Charlie's mom, Linda, definitely keeps her own counsel and we like her immediately. She wears creative jewelry and keeps things close to the vest. It's obvious Charlie values her opinion as well as he spends more time watching how she reacts when Krisily speaks then he does looking at his date.

Krisily is a little intimidated by Linda and takes her off downstairs to let her know "where my head and heart are at." Linda isn't exactly warm, but she's very polite.

Some jokes are also made about the height difference between Charlie's dad (5'Cool and mom (6') and how Charlie and Krisily are more evenly matched to make kissing easier.

Bring in Sarah, who Charlie happily scoops up to his level.

During their alone time, Texas resident Sarah ups the ante by telling Charlie that she's been giving it a lot of thought and has decided that should he choose her that she is definitely willing to move. Having been engaged before she realizes that it will be impossible to grow like they need to unless they are close together.

Charlie's best friend Jack is present for the dinner with the parents and doesn't take an immediate shine to Sarah. He takes her off for a private chat and says that his first impression is that she's a "typical Southern belle; she was a little fake" and he later decides that she's controlling because she doesn't roll over and gush in the same way that Krisily did.

After Sarah leaves, Linda sums things up nicely by noting that both girls are more mature than Charlie.

The next day, Charlie says that he's exhausted and confused. Actually, it looks like he's dressing up standard commitment issues, but if that's his story we'll go along.

He convenes along with the two women and Chris on a deck and let's Chris do his dirty work for him. Instead of the usual shop for a ring, final rose ceremony Sarah and Krisily will each have one last date in New York with Charlie and then be sent back to their regular lives for two months.

At that point it's up to them to see how their relationship(s) progress.

Needless to say, neither is particularly thrilled with this development. During their final dates, Krisily strays into pathetic territory by letting him know that he's the man for her, no matter what. Sarah takes him by surprise when she doesn't yell at him. Instead, she's very understanding and only asks one thing: that while he's taking his time he refrains from being intimate with Krisily.

Whoops. Should have had that conversation before Aruba.

"I have a lot of love and I'm really tired of spreading it around," Charlie admits. Well, dude, then stop it.

One more time, Charlie summarizes his feelings for each of the women. When he's with Sarah he can think of nothing but Sarah. She tells him to jump, and he does, but he likes it. Krisily will love him forever. Kind of like a dog.

At this point, the finale becomes live. Kind of. Of course more time is spent following the girls' returns to Rhode Island and Texas, and Charlie's more-famous brother, Jerry, also gives some brotherly advice -- translation: to thine ownself, be true.

Good lord, how are they going to kill another 100 minutes?

Apparently, with snippets of their "intimate" phone conversations, lots of footage of their episodes screening parties and conversations with each girl's family about how they think Charlie is going to pick their racehorse. And some more one-on-one dates that are too tedious to retell.

Oh, wait ... there's something. During a date in Mexico with Krisily, Charlie honors Sarah's request and tells Krisily that he doesn't think they should do anything beyond kissing and hugging. Hmmmm ... .

Finally, Charlie comes out yet again and talks with Chris about how he really doesn't think it's right to break up with a girl in front of her family, et al. Chris promises that it's going to be as private as it possibly can, you know, for live television.

What this means is that he's going to break up with her in the dressing room.

Classy.

After all of this build-up, Charlie dumps Krisily in less than a minute. He wants her to think of the past two months as a special time. She chooses to look at is as a journey. He gives her a kiss-off piece of jewelry, she assures him she's not mad and both think the other is "great."

It would have been better if he gave her a pen.

Chris joins the party and says that she handled the rejection incredibly well. Then he has her grab her shoes and leave so they can talk about her while she stand out in the hall.

Did we already say how incredibly classy this whole production is?

Krisily manages to keep from crying until the point when she joins Chris onstage for the postgame interview. One last time her dismal dating history is brought up yet again. Nana does not look pleased.

Yeah, yeah, yeah ... she's now a prime contender to be the next "Bachelorette." Let's move on.

Flash to Sarah backstage bouncing up and down and looking as though she's calculating if she has time to run to the bathroom again.

Well, since there's another commerical, yes, she does.

With Krisily's lipstick imprint still on his cheek, Sarah finally comes out and Charlie breaks down crying, repeats himself about being the best boyfriend he can possibly be again and again, gives her a promise ring and bestows upon her the final rose.

Next on the local news: post-nuptial agreements, the new craze.

First time I've liked either Krisily or Charlie actually.
