Reality Overload! A Preview of the Networks' Summer Reality Shows
by Mike DeGeorge -- 05/26/2005

Bet you thought your reality show watching would be slowing down with all the recent finales, didn't you? You'd be wrong. All the networks are bringing you new reality shows, and they're bringing them sooner than you might think! Pencils ready, be sure to take notes, because here is the rundown!

Rather than take a vacation, all the networks are giving reality television fans exactly what they want – a heaping helping of original shows. Here’s the lowdown! (All times Eastern)

Hell's Kitchen, starting May 30 at 8 on Fox. “World renowned but terrifying” Head Chef Gordon Ramsay presides over a group of wannabe chefs. The hopefuls compete to run a new Los Angeles restaurant and will be followed 24/7 by the cameras as they contend with each other and try to survive Ramsay. Hell’s Kitchen is based on a British show of the same name, also starring Ramsay. Click here for our preview.

Dancing with the Stars, starting June 1 at 8 on ABC. Six celebrities are each paired with a professional dance partner to train and compete in front of a studio audience. Each week, one couple will be eliminated based on a combination of judges’ and audience call-in votes.

The celebrity dancers are Trista Sutter (former Bachelorette), Rachel Hunter (host of Are You Hot and Real Gilligan’s Island “Ginger”), Kelly Monaco (Samantha McCall of General Hospital), Joey McIntyre (former New Kid on the Block and actor on Boston Public), Evander Holyfield (World Champion Boxer whose ears Mike Tyson couldn’t eat just one), and John O’Hurley (best known as J. Peterman on Seinfeld). Dancing with the Stars is based on the international hit show Strictly Come Dancing.

Beauty and the Geek, starting June 1 at 7 on the WB. Ashton Kutcher Executive Produces this show where seven beautiful but “academically impaired” women are paired with seven brilliant but “socially challenged” men. The teams compete in tasks best suited for their partners (the men compete in fashion challenges, the women have to build a working rocket) in hopes of winning $250,000.

Hit Me Baby One More Time, starting June 2 at 8 on NBC. Artists from the past such as Loverboy and A Flock of Seagulls compete in an American Idol style competition. Each week, artists perform their biggest hit in addition to their cover of a current single. The audience votes to determine with act deserves “a second chance in the limelight.” Click here for our preview.

The Scholar, starts June 6 at 7 on ABC. Ten high school seniors “from economically disadvantaged backgrounds” compete for a full scholarship to the college of their choice. They will have to demonstrate leadership, academics, creativity, and community service and answer to an Ivy League scholarship committee. Rob Nelson, contestant on The Mole II hosts.

Fire Me... Please, starts June 7 at 8 on CBS, running for four weeks. Each week. two people start a job on the same day and attempt to get fired as close to 3 as possible. Hidden cameras capture their on-the-job antics, and $25,000 is the prize.

The Cut, starts June 9, with the premiere episode running from 7-8:30 on CBS. Tommy Hilfiger searches for the next great fashion designer. Sixteen contestants will live Hilfiger’s “rags-to-riches” life in fast-forward in hopes to design their own line under the Hilfiger label.

I Want to Be a Hilton, starts June 21 at 7-9 on NBC, then moves to 8 Tuesdays. Don’t these people have hotels to run or anything? Kathy Hilton, multi-millionaire hotel heiress regulated to being known as “Paris’ Mom,” hosts. Fourteen “eccentric” young contestants compete for the opportunity to “live like a Hilton” in high society. The winner receives “an extravagant prize package” including a $200,000 trust fund.

Average Joe 4: The Joes Strike Back, starts June 28 at 7 on NBC. Eighteen “Average Joes” compete to win the hand of a lovely lady named Anna. This year’s twists involve advice to the Joes from past contestants and weekly Joe makeovers.

Big Brother 6 starts July 7 at 8 on CBS. The sixth season of the claustrophobic voyeur-fest promises a few changes, not the least among them is a new house. The old house was demolished at the end of the fifth season and replaced with a new, “loft-style” two story house on a different lot, with a pool more than twice as large as the old pool. Twists and turns are unknown at this time, but producer Arnold Shapiro promises “the most colorful, competitive, and charismatic houseguests we’ve ever seen.”

As always, there will be three Big Brother shows per week. If past seasons are any indication, Saturdays at 8 will feature nominations, Tuesdays at 9 highlight the Veto competition, and the live Thursday show at 8, hosted by Julie Chen, will see the eviction of one houseguest. The winner will take home $500,000.

Rock Star: INXS starts 8:30 July 11, and runs 8:30 Mondays, 9 Tuesdays, and 8:30 Wednesdays on CBS. Reality show kingpin Mark Burnett (Survivor, although I get the feeling you knew that) tries his hand at an American Idol-style competition where rockers fight it out to be the new lead singer of INXS. The winner will join the band on a worldwide tour and produce an album with them.

So You Think You Can Dance starts July 20 at 7 Fox. The ads call it “American Idol for dancers.”

The Law Firm, starting July 27 at 8 on NBC. David E. Kelley produces this series in which twelve lawyers will compete against each other, with real lawyers, real judges, and binding decisions. Each week one lawyer is eliminated and the top lawyer wins $250,000.

Meet Mister Mom starts August 3 at 7 on NBC. Billed as “every Mom’s fantasy and every Mom’s revenge,” two busy Moms are whisked away on a vacation, leaving the husbands and kids to take care of the households while the Moms watch via hidden cameras. NBC has promoted it as a comedy reality show, with most of the episode told through the children’s point of view.

The Biggest Loser 2 starts August 9 at 7 on NBC. The weight loss show returns.

Tommy Lee Goes to College, starts August 9 at 8:30 on NBC. Former Motley Crue drummer and husband to Heather Locklear and Pamela Anderson enrolls at the University of Nebraska at Lincoln. Really, if you’re not already hooked, there’s nothing more I can possibly say that would do it.

Hit Me Baby One More Time -- We already had one Reality show like that here. It was called 30 days, and the ex-famous actors/actresses lived together in a house (for 30 days) (actually I'm not sure if they lived together in a house, but it looked like it) and they do certain acting and stuff as their tasks and about a few days an actor gets eliminated. Winner gets a contract with the TV station and a chance to be famous again.

The Scholar -- Sounds like The Apprentice: High School Edition, but the idea of helping out a student is good. But why not just give them all scholarships?

I Want to Be a Hilton -- Will they also be making a video? Lips Sealed

Big Brother 6 -- I really hope a local TV station picks it up! If they're doing a Philippine version of this show, why not air this first so that we know what the show is all about?

So You Think You Can Dance -- We already had one like this show. They called it Star Dance.

None of these look all that entertaining.

I might check out Fire Me Please, just because it looks to be quite funny.  Trying to get fired. Wow

I'm watching Big Brother of course, and I'll give The Cut a try. It sounds to me like The Apprentice. Rockstar.... I'll try it too I guess. Fire Me Please sounds really stupid but really funny at the same time.  Cheesy The Scholar, that sounds cool... they picked a former reality show contestant as the host?

I'm very glad there's a lot of good reality shows, because after May is over my favorite shows all end and I usually go through a horrible withdrawl period (just kidding lol), but now I don't have to! Cheesy

NEW YORK (AP) -- Get ready for Tommy Lee as an undergrad, two separate dance contests and apprentice rock stars, apprentice chefs, apprentice fashion designers, apprentice scholars, apprentice slackers and apprentice Hiltons.

With your favorite television series hibernating for the summer, television networks are uncorking a flood of reality programming.

Broadcast networks want to do more than show reruns all summer -- but they don't want to spend much money, either. The result is reality-clogged schedules. If the networks are lucky, one or two might capture the public imagination.

Summer has started already for the networks; "Hell's Kitchen" began Monday, and the WB begins its heavily promoted "Beauty & the Geek" on Wednesday. As the title suggests, the series takes some socially challenged smart guys and couples them up with dimwitted lookers. The couple that works best together in various contests could share $250,000, and who knows what else?

"I wouldn't call it a reality show so much as a social experiment," said Jason Goldberg, who produced the series with Ashton Kutcher.

Other new series in the works:

"Hell's Kitchen" stars tightly wound British chef Gordon Ramsay, who's opening a new Los Angeles restaurant and chooses between contestants who want to cook there. Premiered May 30 on Fox.

"Dancing With the Stars" will pair six celebrities, like boxer Evander Holyfield, with professional dancers to compete in a ballroom dancing contest. Premieres June 1 on ABC.

"Hit Me Baby" exhumes has-been music stars who try to show a live audience they still have what it takes. The Knack, Vanilla Ice, Cameo, Tiffany, Wang Chung, Loverboy and Arrested Development are among the acts competing for charity in the NBC series, which premieres June 2.

"The Scholar" will feature bright students competing for a college scholarship they might not otherwise be able to afford. No, they won't have to eat bugs: they have to show book smarts, compete in oral exams and defend themselves to an Ivy League scholarship committee. Starts June 6 on ABC.

"Fire Me ... Please" films two people starting new jobs on the same day doing everything they can to be fired by midday. The person who wins will earn more than he could ever hope for from the job. Starts June 7 on CBS.

"The Cut" brings 16 aspiring fashion designers to compete for a job with Tommy Hilfiger. The winner gets the opportunity to design a fashion collection under Hilfiger's label. Starts June 9 on CBS.

"I Want to Be a Hilton." Fox still has Paris, but NBC has matriarch Kathy Hilton guiding 14 young contestants through the New York society scene. Whoever emerges as the winner of Hilton's contests gets to live the life of a rich person for a year. Debuts June 21.

"The Princes of Malibu" is an Osbournes-style show that follows music producer David Foster, his new wife and adult stepsons Brandon and Brody Jenner, who move into Foster's 22-acre waterfront estate. The Fox series premieres July 10.

"Hell's Kitchen," on Fox, lets chef Gordon Ramsay (front) select his help.

"Rock Star: INXS." Super-producer Mark Burnett is behind this contest, where amateur singers compete for a job with the Australian rock band INXS, whose former singer Michael Hutchence died in 1997. The winner goes on tour and records an album with the band. Premieres July 11 on CBS, which will air the show three times a week until it's done.

"Brat Camp," a remake of a popular British series, send six out-of-control teens to a boot-camp style program in the Oregon wilderness. The ABC series premieres July 13.

"So You Think You Can Dance." Fox failed miserably with an attempt to hold a junior version of "American Idol," so now that show's creators are trying a dance version. You know the drill: embarrassing tryouts, pressure-filled performances and, finally, a winner. Starts July 20.

"The Law Firm" on NBC is produced by David E. Kelley, who with "The Practice" and "Ally McBeal" is familiar with fictional lawyers. This show takes actual lawyers trying actual cases in front of judges and juries. Trial attorney Roy Black is the host for the series, which starts July 28.

"Meet Mister Mom" sends stay-at-home moms on vacation and leaves clueless dads in charge of the house. Mom gets to watch the fun on closed-circuit TV. NBC, premieres August 2.

"Tommy Lee Goes to College" trails the photogenic rock star as he enrolls in the University of Nebraska -- trying out for the marching band and cramming for exams. It starts August 16 on NBC. No word on whether Lee will talk about the lawsuit he and his bandmates in Motley Crue filed this week against the network for barring them from NBC shows.

"Welcome to the Neighborhood" brings prospective new families into a suburban cul-de-sac. The white families who live there now have their preconceptions tested with potential neighbors that include gay, minority and heavily tattooed couples. The winning family gets to move in. The ABC series doesn't have a premiere date yet.

"Are You the Girl" chronicles the search for a new partner for Rozonda "Chilli" Thomas and Tionne "T-Boz" Watkins, the two surviving members of TLC after the death of Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes. They're looking to start a new group, and the search will be seen on UPN. No premiere date has been set.

If that's not enough, existing reality series like "Renovate My Family"
(Fox), "Big Brother" (CBS), "Average Joe" (NBC) and "Wife Swap" (ABC) return with new episodes.

New scripted series will be scarce. However, ABC has the six-hour period piece "Empire," about ancient Roman rivals trying to succeed Julius Caesar starting June 28. And Fox's "The Inside" is a new cop drama focusing on the Los Angeles violent crimes unit.

Is summer the "low-season" for TV viewership because everyone is on holiday?
