The Real World: Austin, Episode 1: Sweet 16

The 16th season of The Real World starts off predictably - there’s drinking. There’s making out. There’s sexual tension. There’s partying in the hot tub. There’s… marriage proposals? Wait a second…  
 
If you haven’t read my recap of the casting special, you might want to check it out now before you read this article. That’s where I introduced all of the cast members, and I don’t think it makes sense to go through all that again. So if you haven’t read it yet, you might think I’m jumping right in.
 
Also, a lot of people e-mailed me with questions about music after watching Newlyweds and The Ashlee Simpson Show, questions that I, unfortunately, usually couldn’t answer. I’m going to try my best to include the names of songs in my recaps, if I can. If you know a song that I don’t, please e-mail me and let me know!
 
We start out in Billerica, MA, where Danny is saying goodbye to his family. He explains that one of his sisters is in medical school and the other is a nurse, but he and his father (his best friend) build houses. He says it’s good for him to leave, but he’ll miss his family. In the car with his father, he comments that he’ll have to get used to the hot weather in Texas.
 
Danny explains that his parents are divorced and he doesn’t get along with his mother. His dad wants what’s best for him and wants him to find out for himself what that is. He’s not sure at all what Texas will be like. He wants to experience something different, and thinks that getting away from the snow is a good first step.
 
This is the true story… Come on, sing along! You know the words!
 
We must be in Austin, ‘cause there are the cows. Moo! Austin landmarks. A cab picks Danny up at the airport. Danny knows nothing about Texas and expected to see cowboys on horseback. Well, not at the airport, Danny! The planes spook the horses. He thinks that it’s a great idea to start something new in a place he knows nothing about. Makes sense to me.
 
Rachel has a leopard-print bag. Raise your hand if you’re surprised. She joined the Army as a nurse and went to Iraq the day after Bush announced that we were going to war. Nehemiah, on the other hand, has just graduated from college, where he studied media arts. Wait. I thought he was 19. He’s already graduated from college? I’m sorry, Nehemiah, you’re too smart for this show. Go home! Anyway, he wanted to leave California and some of the bad influences around him. Like I said, smart.
 
Nehemiah and Rachel meet and hug. Rachel interviews that Nehemiah looks like he’s all about black power, but he was smiling and welcoming. They get into personal stuff and Rachel shares that she and her boyfriend don’t have sex. Really? Huh. Nehemiah bets Rachel $50 that she’ll be getting naked in the next five months. He thinks these will be the best five months of his life.
 
Johanna tells us that she moved to the U.S. when she was 10. She’s a case manager at a shelter home, and was accepted at Columbia to get her Master’s in social work. However, she deferred so that she could come to Austin. I… I don’t even know where to begin. She delayed the chance to get a Master’s so she could come on a reality show? I… I just… I can’t right now. Maybe later.
 
Wes is from a “safe” suburb but says that it’s not a great place to learn a lot. He went to the biggest party school in the U.S., Arizona State. Wes and Johanna meet and hug. Wes thinks that Johanna is beautiful, interesting, and mysterious. They learn that they’re both single.
 
 Danny’s cab stops to get Melinda. She says that she’s just getting into the “crazy party life.” She and her boyfriend Jason have promise rings. Hope you didn’t pay too much for those, Jason. She thinks their relationship might survive, but she’s a “nymph.” Danny says that he wants an all-American girl he can have fun with. He meets Melinda, who he thinks is gorgeous. He also carries her bag. They learn that they’re both the youngest in their families, and they think they’ll get along well. As Lenny Kravitz’s “Lady” (ug) plays, they get back in the cab. The driver asks if they liked the view of the place where they got Melinda; apparently it’s like a make-out point. Melinda jokes that they should’ve made out. (Her and Danny, not her and the cab driver.)
 
Lacey joins Johanna and Wes on some boat. They’re happy that she’s a hairdresser. Lacey talks about her boyfriend, Ryan. Nehemiah and Rachel arrive at the house in a trolley car. They open the sliding glass door and are met by a huge neon cowboy sign that reads “Big Tex.” Obligatory house craziness ensues. I kind of want someone to show up one season and say, “Eh. It’s all right.” Some song about Austin is playing. (Sorry, Google wasn’t helpful.) There’s an indoor pool. Rachel and Nehemiah put on cowboy hats.
 
Wes, Johanna, and Lacey arrive at the house and meet Nehemiah and Rachel. Lacey is happy that the house is so big, since she’ll have her own space. I think Lacey and I have a psychic link, because almost everything she says in this episode is what I’m thinking. Wes thinks the hot tub is private and romantic. Wow, that’s quite an original thought there, Wes. Did you hurt yourself?
 
Johanna hopes that the other two roommates are guys and that one is her type. Melinda and Danny arrive and there are intros all around. Johanna notices Danny’s accent, telling us that she loves accents. She thinks he looks like an Abercrombie model. Rachel and Melinda claim one room, where Rachel says that they’ll make out. Lacey and Johanna claim another room. The seven meet up again and the girls make sure that everyone’s okay with the arrangements. Everyone is, and Nehemiah, like Kelly in the New Orleans season, notes that they’ll be playing musical beds anyway.
 
It’s the first day in the house, so, of course, it’s time to get in the hot tub. The seven toast each other, and Melinda hopes that they eventually have a huge orgy. Johanna asks Wes who he thinks he’ll hook up with, and he names her. Lacey is asked about the craziest place she’s had sex; she comes clean that she’s a virgin. She interviews that she’s prepared to face people with different practices. Her friends aren’t virgins, and she’s okay with it; she thinks it’s a personal decision. Melinda asks her if she’d ever make out with a girl. Are you offering, Melinda?
 
Wes tells Melinda and Rachel to stop talking about making out and just kiss already. They do. Wes declines to say, “Why doesn’t a million dollars just drop out of the sky already?” Johanna says that Melinda makes her look like a prude. What about Rachel? Melinda gleefully says that she called Wes’ bluff.
 
In the pool, Melinda tells Danny that she feels a connection to him. It’s called pheromones, sweetie. She thinks they have a lot in common. Well, you’re both pretty. There’s a start. “It’s hot,” she Parises. She mentions that she has a boyfriend, but... Danny says that he doesn’t want to come between them.
 
The roommies decide to go out, but first they have to take a shower together. (They’re still in their bathing suits, so Melinda’s wish for an orgy has not yet been fulfilled.) I have to say that Melinda looks so much like Veronica Mars’ Kristen Bell here that it’s scary. She says that she can be herself around Danny, and she’s happy. There’s some flirtatious towel-snapping between the two lovebirds. Are they twelve?
 
The roommates get ready to go out. Danny and Wes wonder which of them will hook up first, and with Johanna or Melinda. Wes says that if neither of them has had any sex in a month, they’ll go out and pick up some hot University of Texas girls. Run, girls! Run! In the foyer, Johanna tells Lacey that she’s attracted to Danny. Lacey asks if she’s considered telling Danny, but she hasn’t. Lacey notes that Johanna is “drunk and mumbling.” Johanna says that Melinda is giving it her all. She might hook up with Danny, but not now, since he’s so “wanted.” Lacey doesn’t think that Danny is sure which girl he likes, Melinda or Johanna.
 
Parado X. Nehemiah says that they’re all having a great time, even though he’s the only roommate who can dance. Heh. Lacey doesn’t like dancing, since she thinks it’s just an excuse for people to rub up against each other. I’m flashing back to Julia Stiles in 10 Things I Hate About You. Johanna and Danny dance and she kisses him. Danny, calling Johanna “Joey,” is a little confused about what just happened. He interviews that he still likes Melinda. The song playing here is, I think, Basement Jaxx’s “Romeo.”
 
 The roommates go home and go to bed. Johanna tells Lacey that she can’t believe she kissed Danny. Lacey says that Johanna is mad because Danny kissed her, then was all over Melinda. Johanna regrets the kiss, since she doesn’t want to ruin her relationship with Danny.
 
Wes, Danny, and Nehemiah are all excited about the girls. Wes admits that he looked into Rachel’s eyes and wanted to propose to her. He heads to her room, gets down on one knee, and, calling her Rachel Marie Presley, asks her to marry him. “No,” she replies immediately. I might have to take back half the bad things I said about Rachel, because that was funny. Wes acknowledges that the whole thing was a joke. Rachel interviews that Wes is everything she doesn’t want in a guy.
 
Not to be outdone, Danny goes to Melinda’s bed and gets down on one knee, taking her hand. He asks her to marry him. She laughs and hides under the covers without answering.

I remember all that ! But to bad for danny he has to into surgery for the anonoymous punch he got in the fight! I like it already.
The house is tiny compared to the phlildelphia one!
