How to win TAR

Having watched a few seasons now and just seeing people make critical mistakes, I thought we should start this thread and talk about what it takes to win this game.

1. Don't let yourself get panicked. People make stupid mistakes that cost them when they get panicked or flustered. If you find you're panicked/flustered, stop, take a couple deep breaths and then try to think things through again. It's teams that keep a level head about them when they are really under pressure that excel in this game.

2. Learn from your mistakes. Mistakes will be made throughout the course of the game, learn from them and don't keep making the same mistakes.

3. Be supportive of your teammate. Bickering and being rude to each other doesn't help. It hurts morale and causes more mistakes when you get caught up in being angry instead of caught up in completing your task. Compliments build confidence, criticisms don't.

4. Make use of the resources around you before charging off. Reichen and Chip had a massive advantage in the last episode because while waiting for their plane, they walked around and spoke to people, found someone with a laptop and had them punch in the location and actually got a map/directions. Numerous times I have seen people, instead of running to the airport, actually borrowing cell phones from people to make calls ahead and book their tickets before they get there. The first episode this season you see everyone just charging off in a herd trying to beat each other in traffic. Most of them went to the wrong counter just assuming it might be the quickest flight. I'd have stopped and used a cell phone or even a pay phone to find out which was the quickest flight and to try to book tickets asap rather than trying to just beat everyone in traffic. They couldn't possibly drive there faster than you could call.

5. When you're in a country where you do not speak the langauge, go out of your way to find a cab driver that speaks english. A driver who does not understand what you want can't get you to your destination. Here's another one from last season. Reichen and Chip who were way behind everyone else at one point caught up because they stopped at a hotel and asked them to call for a cab and ask for an english speaking driver. Their driver ended up beating all the other teams to the pit-stop because he understood what they wanted, while everyone else wandered around aimlessly trying to get their cab drivers to understand them. The extra time it took them to stop and have the special driver sent for them more than made up for any time they had wasted.

Any other good ones people can think of to add to this?

Be obnoxious...this helped the Guidos, Wil & Tara, and Teri & Ian ... all were obnoxious and still managed to get in the final 3.

Greetings...

Another lesson from the past seasons of AR - remember that in foreign countries that *you* are the foreigner. Treating the natives with a little bit of respect and courtesy can go a long way.

The natives will be more likely to assist (with information, cell phones, etc) if they are treated like the hosts, not the guests.

Just my two cents.

I think the main thing would be to stop and think before you act.. they have this "it's a race" mentality going, so they just do the first thing that pops into their head, rather than slowing down for a moment and thinking. Also, having had the advantage of watching five races.. I think I'd do some reaseach on "what to do if... " for example the time when several ended up putting unleaded in their diesel vehicles. The one guy who knew to drain it out and refill with unleaded got the vehicle running in a matter of minutes.. whereas others just called a garage and got a hotel room. Knowing how to fix the problem would have been a great advantage.

Another thing I just thought of... ENJOY the time you have. I think taking that extra second or two to see the places you've never been, appreciate the view, relax for a moment.. dance the tango!!. LOL It is just a tiny little stress reliever that I think would do wonders! And even if you don't win, you've at least enjoyed the time you had!

That's one thing I love about Mirna and Charla.. they totally enjoy the race.. Mirna was the only person who took two seconds out of their busy schedule and danced the tango this week. It didn't slow them down that much, didn't hurt their position in the race.. and it's just the sort of thing you need to sort of lighten the mood to make going on easier. I think that's one of the reasons I like them so much.. they compete.. but they ENJOY the race. (Charla in the foam party was a riot!! Foam up to her chin and her dancing away... lol)

This is by far (my view) strongest point! Stop look listen Examples. Episode 1 this race. racers went into Casino to play casino game WITHOUT getting clue first. Lawyer Wannabe NOT walking to check point! Twins not using bikes! These were silly mistakes that could have been avoided if they paid closer attention to what tehy were doing
