Ithaca man doesn't win, but gets engaged

By ROSEMARY HORVATH
Sun Staff Writer

Ithaca's Aaron Crumbaugh and girlfriend Hayden Kristzanson didn't walk away from The Amazing Race with a million dollars but he did propose marriage to her before millions of TV viewers.
The two watched the final episode of the CBS globetrotting adventure Tuesday night like the rest of TV land. Except they were in Madison Square Garden at a New York celebration.

After the final two hours of the 13-week series, the winning couple and three runner-ups met a media blitz head on.

Televisionwithoutpity.com brought back teams from previous Amazing Race seasons for fans to meet.

"I felt like a rock star,“ said Crumbaugh, 25, Wednesday before leaving the Big Apple to return home to Los Angeles. "It was like a Star Trek convention. These people plan to hold more conventions and want us back.“

The 1997 Ithaca High School graduate and Kristzanson, originally from Washington State, are models on the West Coast, and both have auditions for TV pilot shows and daytime soaps in the next few weeks.

The final four were featured on the CBS The Early Show Wednesday morning. Instead of a wedding this December, Kristzanson said Aaron will enter an intense culinary school in Pasadena, thus pushing the wedding back to the following year.

Crumbaugh told host Harry Smith he "couldn't have asked for a better partner“ in the race than Hayden. The final four traveled 45,000 miles through 10 countries and four continents, all in 30 days. Their trip began Aug. 8 and ended Sept. 18 in 2004. The program began airing in November.

Crumbaugh said the Tuesday finale made it look like he and Hayden gave up. Not so.

Their team and the team of Freddy Holliday and Kendra Bentley, the eventual winners, were atop a mountain in China. The challenge had the women try to find a key to open a lock. There seemed to be 50 keys and 50 locks. But after nearly five hours and bloody, bruised hands, no key was found.

Crumbaugh said that's when the producer gave the two teams identical options. Stay on the mountain and start again in the morning or take a clue and get a four-hour penalty.

"We had traveled 17 to 20 hours on a train across China and camped out in the cold,“ Crumbaugh said. Their cab driver got lost and set them back two hours. Hayden had been working the locks five hours when Crumbaugh and she decided to take the clue.

He told Hayden, "we'll have a race to the end and take the penalty.“ But just as he said that the other team member found the right key.

"Our hearts sank,“ Crumbaugh said. "It literally came down to seconds to losing a million dollars.“

Crumbaugh said the tight editing of the weekly segments invented personalities. "I was disappointed how Hayden was portrayed. She always seemed angry. I wouldn't want to marry someone like that. They didn't show when I got angry and hollered. They didn't show when we laughed and had fun.“

Crumbaugh chose Ethopia as giving him the most meaningful experience.

"People there literally had nothing,“ he said. "Yet every single person had a smile on their face.“

The crazy pace of those 30 days earned Crumbaugh another lesson.

"I fly now and no matter what happens I say this is a piece of cake.“
