From RNO -- Thinking Smart in Episode 1

I'd like to note that I didn't write this, I'm just sharing it with you. It's by Jeffery Clinard of Reality News Online, my favorite Reality News website. (This is a forum and is therefore in a different catergory.) Anyway, enjoy!

Another edition of The Amazing Race has begun, with quite a few segments along the path to the first pit stop. However, no matter how many races are run, it seems there are always some people who fail to learn anything from them, and keep making the same mistakes which have gotten other teams into trouble.

The first major mistake was made by a majority of the teams on the American Airline flight, when they couldn’t figure out where to find a bus that would take them to Ancon. When in doubt, teams should ask a taxicab driver. Indeed, many teams on the United Flight did exactly that - get a taxi to take them to the bus station.

The second major mistake made by many teams was not checking the piles of sand before digging in them. Some of it might be forgiven, since after Megan and Heidi started digging for the last flight out, a lot of teams made the assumption they knew what they were doing. It was almost comical to see so many teams scramble like crazy to get the last flight. However, in the end the merging of the 7:00 and 7:40 a.m. flights meant other factors contributed to the placement of the bottom eight teams.

A third major mistake teams made is worrying too much about Rob and Amber, or somehow trying to plot to get rid of them. There are only a few things teams can do about another team. They can refuse to share information with them (or give them false information), they can use a Yield on them, or they can simply outrace them every step of the way. Sure, the pair did well on Survivor: All Stars, but this is a completely different kind of game. Teams should worry about themselves first and foremost.

Finally, the detour option of rope baskets or roping a llama was quite interesting. After some thought, I’ve decided that the faster option was shuttling the llamas - IF the team figured out the trick to it. Most teams didn’t, and ended up dealing with stubborn animals that spit on them, or leading them one at a time. Only Meredith and Gretchen figured out the best way to perform the task, with Meredith leading both llamas, and Gretchen giving them taps on the hindquarters which the animals knew was a signal to move forward. Teams who couldn’t figure out that trick were better off hauling the baskets to the shop.

Interestingly enough, the teams finished more or less in the same position they did the zip lines in, with only a bit of shuffling at the end due to desperation racing. Indeed, position was kept for much of the leg, with the teams on the combination 7:00 and 7:40 a.m. flight finishing in the same order they figured out where to get to one of the marked taxicabs. It shows that some of the little things can make a big difference in the race.

So with one leg down, which teams were thinking smart in episode one?

Debbie and Bianca. First place, and each $10,000 richer because of it. They started off pretty well, borrowing a cell phone to get the correct information on the flights out of LAX. They also were smart to break away and join forces with Susan and Patrick in Lima, a move which eventually put both teams on the fastest flight because they checked on the times before they started digging. The team did bicker over which detour option to perform (which let Susan and Patrick catch up), and abandoned the llamas when it was clear they weren’t good at it, and lost time, but made up for it by having a good map that got them to the mission faster than their main competition. Well done.

Susan and Patrick. This team had one of the best performances of the first leg. They were consistently ahead of the others, and worked well together at all times. They had the fastest flight to Peru, then broke away from the clueless teams and got on the first bus to Ancon, and dug up the first flight in the sand. From there, they had a few problems with their llamas, but ended up in a very respectable second place. If this team has a problem, it’s worrying too much about Rob and Amber.

Rob and Amber. I always encourage teams to play to their strengths, and their fame from Survivor came in handy. They met somebody at customs who recognized them, and provided them with assistance because he knew the local customs. It cost them a few dollars, but bribing the bus drivers to not stop to pick up passengers helped move them to the front of the pack. It paid off when they took advantage of other team’s mistakes and got the best flight to Cozco. Finally, instead of complaining, they actually did something about the stalled traffic by helping move the stalled vehicle. The only thing that worries me about this team is that Amber seems to have over packed for the trip.

Brian and Greg. This team did many things right, such as getting a taxi to take them to the bus stop and examining the sand piles before they started digging up a ticket. Taking those few minutes to check rather than assuming the pile with the lowest number of signs was the better flight showed they were thinking intelligently. Overall, they made up a lot of time from the slower initial flight during the leg, and are in good shape at this point.

Lynn and Alex. This team made a few mistakes, which means I’m worried about them long term. They took a gamble on going to the United counter instead of American Airlines, which didn’t pay off and cost them the faster flight. The basic logic was that they should have gotten off at the first stop where they could get information and tickets. If it was faster, great, if not, they hop on the next shuttle to the other ticket counter. I also think they made a mistake in Ancon, since they took some kind of motorized transportation instead of a rickshaw, which the rules seemed to require. To their credit, they checked the sand piles before they started digging.

Meredith and Gretchen. This team had mixed smarts in this leg. They got a cab to take them to the bus stop (bypassing a problem that hurt many teams), then figured out the best way to lead the llamas to their pen. However, they dug up the last remaining 7:40 a.m. flight ticket when a 7:00 a.m. ticket was still available.

Ray and Deana. This team was smart enough to check both remaining sand piles before digging. They had a bit of a slow start out of the Cozco airport, and stayed in position during the final segments of the leg.

Uchenna and Joyce. This team erred by not taking a taxicab to the bus depot in Peru, resulting in their being the last team to find the sand piles. Ironically, they still ended up with a 7:00 a.m. flight (later delayed), but teams can’t count on other teams making big mistakes. Overall, this team followed the pattern of this leg, staying in the same position they were in during the zip line task.

Megan and Heidi. This team isn’t looking too good. They started digging for a plane ticket without bothering to check the times listed on the other sand pile, and found themselves in a mad scramble to get on the worst flight. They ended up at the back of the pack until the end, where a better cab driver gave them the edge needed to stay out of last place. They will have to do much better in future legs, or they will be eliminated quickly.

Ron and Kelly. This team made a number of mistakes, and nearly paid for them. Just getting tickets without attempting to find out if the American flight was faster than the United flight was a mistake. They were at the front of the line, and could stall it out while the information was obtained. Next, they decided to just start digging in the sand pile where Ryan, Chuck, Megan, and Heidi were frantically trying to find a ticket, only later to realize that just because some other teams are doing a foolish thing, there was no reason for them to also do it. Overall, this team did not do well, and was very lucky not to be eliminated in this leg.

Ryan and Chuck. What went wrong? Well, many things. When Megan and Heidi told them they “just picked one” of the sand piles to dig in, they didn’t question whether or not that was thinking smart - they just started digging rather than questioning that logic. They had a bad start out of the Cozco airport, and lagged for much of the leg. In the end, it was a taxi race, and they ended up losing, though not by much.

I didn't write it. I just copied it off a website. I gave credit to the original author and pointed out the website, though, so no harm done. (See top of page)
