Fifth Team Eliminated in 'Amazing Race'
NEW YORK - Dating on-and-off couple Ray Housteau and Deana Shane were the fifth team eliminated on a two-hour, two-leg edition of "The Amazing Race."

During the first leg of Tuesday's episode, the couple scaled across a power plant cooling tower to win a Fast Forward challenge, enabling them to skip to the end of the leg. But their luck ran out on the second leg. The stockbroker and marketing executive lost a footrace to brothers Brian and Greg Smith, who flipped their vehicle on the way to the Pit Stop, injuring their cameraman.

"The race was totally out of our mind at that point," Shane told The Associated Press Wednesday about the car crash.

"Our instinct right away was that the race was off and to figure out what we can do to help," Housteau said.

The only team that didn't stop: former "Survivor: All-Stars" cast members and engaged couple Rob Mariano and Amber Brkich.

Housteau and Shane had briefly aligned with the duo during the first few legs of the race. "We used the hatred the other teams had for Rob and Amber as a weapon for us," Housteau said.

Ray and Deana Eliminated on 'Race'

By DERRIK J. LANG, Associated Press Writer

NEW YORK - Despite evading a bloody cave-rappelling accident and a car crash in South Africa, dating on-and-off couple Ray Housteau and Deana Shane were the fifth team eliminated on a two-hour, two-leg edition of "The Amazing Race" Tuesday.

During the episode's first leg, the couple scaled across a power plant cooling tower to win a Fast Forward challenge, enabling the duo to skip to the end of the leg. Their luck ran out on the second leg. The stockbroker and marketing executive lost a foot race to brothers Brian and Greg Smith, who flipped their vehicle on the way to the Pit Stop, injuring their cameraman.

"The race was totally out of our mind at that point," Shane told The Associated Press about the car crash.

"Our instinct right away was that the race was off and to figure out what we can do to help them," said Housteau.

The only team that didn't stop at the wreck: former "Survivor: All-Stars" cast members and engaged couple Rob Mariano and Amber Brkich. Housteau and Shane had briefly aligned with them during the first few legs of the race.

"We used the hatred the other teams had for Rob and Amber as a weapon for us," said Housteau.

The cameraman survived the crash, but retired couple team member Gretchen Smith didn't fare well during an earlier cave-rappelling challenge. After falling, her face was covered in blood.

"I felt so bad for her," said Shane. "It looked so painful."

Housteau and Shane's on-screen bickering was reminiscent of past racers Colin Guinn and Christie Woods and Jonathan Baker and Victoria Fuller. Shane blames the show's editing for her meek treatment.

"I'd say 95 percent of the time I was screaming at Ray, but they never showed it," said Shane. "They made me look like a sweet innocent little girl who's getting yelled at by her boyfriend, which is totally not true."

"I was obviously the poor man's Jonathan," said Housteau.

Housteau and Shane are no longer on-and-off. They were engaged last December and will race to the altar this May.
