Askmen.com-Top 10 TAR DESTINATIONS!
« on: May 17th, 2005, 9:28pm »
Quote Quote Modify Modify

One of the best reality TV shows on the air takes not only its contestants, but also its viewers, to the most interesting parts of the world. And right to the thick of the location: no resorts, no idiot-proof guides, no sanitized views. The Amazing Race participants plunge right into the local customs and experience stupefying culture shock. There's no better way to explore a new place.
Below are 10 of the coolest destinations featured on CBS's The Amazing Race, based on the activities the teams had to do for their challenges. Check them out and have your own amazing journey.

Note: The locations and challenges are from Season 1 to Season 7.

Number 10
Dubai, United Arab Emirates
Season 5, Episode 8

Dubai is quite possibly the fastest-growing city in the world, having gone from a Bedouin outpost to a world-class commercial hub in half a century. If the sleek glittering skyline with futuristic buildings doesn't astound you, the city's offerings will: cool sports grounds, amazing water parks, and the world's only 7-star hotel, the Burj Al Arab. And the city keeps growing; artificial islands, an underwater hotel and a massive pleasure complex called Dubailand are all in the works.

What not to miss: Dune bashing
Step outside the city limits into the vast desert and plow through the smooth dunes in a 4X4 -- more fun and rowdy than a roller coaster. Then, chill in a luxury tent in the desert, smoke some shisha, and enjoy a belly dancing show.

Number 9
Sydney, Australia
Season 2, Episode 8

Australia's most exciting city has everything for the novelty-hungry traveler: amazing sporting events, beautiful beaches, great shopping, a bustling nightlife, and a staggering variety of fish & chips joints. Its centerpiece is the Sydney Harbour, the playground of its citizens, where parks, restaurants, museums, and the world-famous Sydney Opera House converge. Bondi Beach is where Aussie cuties -- perpetually grooming their sun-kissed bodies to perfection -- go to frolic.

What not to miss: The Sydney Bridge Climb
Take a 3½-hour tour of the massive bridge that connects both sides of the Harbour by climbing up arches, ladders and catwalks. Once at the top -- secured to the metal structure with a "BridgeSuit" -- you will be at the highest point in the city and in the position to look over one of the most mind-blowing panoramas in the world.

Number 8
Calgary, Canada
Season 5, Episode 12

If you crave the Wild West with a northern flavor, Calgary is your thing. At the foot of the Rockies, this city of wealthy cowboys and oil tycoons knows how to have a good time. You've no doubt heard of Alberta beef; have it seared fresh in the city's myriad steakhouses, then ride the roller coasters at Calaway Park, check out cool exhibits at the Aerospace Museum, and tower over the city atop the 525-foot Calgary Tower. If you go in July, you can catch the Calgary Stampede, a 10-day orgy of Western fun including rodeos, chuckwagon races and rowdy hoedowns.

What not to miss: Olympic Luge at Canada Olympic Park
Plunge feet first in the luge tube at speeds of up to 40 miles per hour. It'll only cost you about $8 US per slide, all equipment included.

Number 7
Rotorua, New Zealand
Season 5, Episode 10

In the heart of Maori civilization, you can find an adrenaline junkie's paradise. New Zealand's Rotorua, the self-described epicenter of "some of the world's most incredible Earth forces," imparts a sense of daring on its visitors. Suddenly, you feel like jumping from a high tower, being blown into the air by a giant fan, kayaking down a waterfall, and speeding on a motorboat. Then, to relax, you can catch some big fish and wind down at a thermal pool. Rotorua is proof that nature wants you to have fun and be happy.

What not to miss: Sledging
It's the marriage of whitewater rafting and bodyboarding. Rush down a fierce river on your belly, using flippers to steer. It's you versus the forces of nature, mano a mano.

Number 6
Soweto, South Africa
Season 7, Episode 5

South Africa's cosmopolitan and cultural elite have made Soweto (an acronym for South Western Townships) their home. And it's not hard to see why. The anti-apartheid movement started here, and it is the chosen city of Winnie Mandela and Desmond Tutu. Since so many South African cultures converge here, it's a melting pot of customs, full of things to explore. The contrast of rich and poor can be a bit daunting, but in the end, everybody wants to have a good time. And this they do at the local music joints and shebeens, the South African speakeasies.

What not to miss: Spelunking in the Cradle of Humankind
A brief drive away from Soweto, you'll find this UNESCO World Heritage Site, where a large system of underground caves holds one of the richest collections of prehistoric hominid fossils. Rappel down a hole in the ground and explore the Wonder Caves and the Sterkfontein Caves.

Number 5
Sigiriya, Sri Lanka
Season 6, Episode 10

Towering over this palace town is a massive monolith, the interior of which is adorned with frescoes of playful maidens, probably a ruler's harem of women. The town itself is arranged in a perfect square, with the rock as its center, and bordered by a moat. At the rock's summit is a palatial garden, one of many in the area. This is not a place for thrills, but rather for quiet contemplation.

What not to miss: Elephant polo
Okay, so even the most serene destinations need a little action, which is why the locals like to hit a ball with a mallet while riding an elephant. It is in fact one of the more popular Asian sports and a must for any visitor.

Number 4
Grindavik, Iceland
Season 6, Episode 1

Iceland is one of the most interesting and underrated spots in the world, as it's a land still visibly undergoing geological evolution. Volcanic land masses make for an interesting landscape, where geysers breathe and the Earth steams. One Grindavik attraction that's popular among tourists and locals is the Blue Lagoon, a complex of geothermal natural springs whose healing and rejuvenating powers lure the perpetually young.

What not to miss: Ice climbing
Before getting pampered at the thermal spas, challenge yourself by climbing the ice walls of Grindavik, famous among ice climbers worldwide.

Number 3
Lake Manyara, Tanzania
Season 5, Episode 7

Tanzania and Kenya are known for hosting the best safaris in Africa, and Lake Manyara is their pièce de résistance. For serious nature lovers, the lake, where many Maasai live, boasts some of the coolest wildlife, including more than 350 species of birds. You can watch gazelles, impala and wildebeest flock in packs, and marvel at lions that climb trees to catch their prey. The lodging is half the fun when you stay in luxurious tent camps.

What not to miss: Zipping over a ravine
Manyara features several gorges that are hundreds of feet deep. "Zip lines" connect both sides, allowing daring tourists to make like Indiana Jones.

Number 2
Alleppey, India
Season 4, Episode 7

"The Venice of India" is a town that practically lives on water, making it a serene, restful destination. Visitors are content just sitting on a boat and watching the lush, colorful vegetation roll by. The river banks are lined with palm trees that sway in the breeze. Soon enough, you'll do the same as the forces of nature suck you into a state of utter calm. Lodge on a houseboat and your relaxing getaway will be complete. For fun, locals organize a variety of boat races, featuring impossibly long rowboats with scores of rowers per boat.

What not to miss: Bull racing
Popular to the region are the bull races, where competing pairs of bulls -- harnessed together -- pull you across a long stretch of very wet mud.

Number 1
Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
Season 2, Episode 2

The world's premier party city and hotbed of stunning women is also an adventurer's mecca. The surfing and bodyboarding on the beaches is just a start. You can sail in postcard-perfect Guanabara Bay (at the bottom of Sugar Loaf Mountain) or hike in the tropical thicket of the Tijuca Forest. There's always a celebration in Rio, be it at the city's famed samba schools or on the streets of Lapa and Gavea, two bar-filled districts, where the mingling crowds often take over the roads.

What not to miss: Hang-gliding
Jump off Pedra Bonita, a mountain overlooking the beach, and glide over the most breathtaking view on the planet. Land on the sand, grab a caipirinha (a traditional Brazilian drink) and feel alive.

I must say Canada is not near as exciting as some of the places they missed. i.e. Ethiopia, Botswana, Peru, Phillipines, England, Germany, Morocco, Singapore. Canada is just a bit too plain and boring. There's not a huge culture shock when you go to Canada. Plus, Canada is basically the 51st state (I'm sure I have just offended some Canadian somewhere...but let's face it, it's true!)

Well, they did edit out several tasks while they were in Calgary, hence it did not seem very exciting.
